New Boston residential listing has stunning waterfront views - because it's a boat, a really big, historic boat

Nantucket Lightship at Commercial Wharf

Don't let this deal sail away.

The owners of one of the two red Nantucket Lightships now docked in Boston Harbor (yes, two) have put their craft up for sale.

For $5.2 million, you can sail away from Commercial Wharf in the North End with a six-bedroom houseboat with a 2,000-square-foot deck, a gourmet kitchen with modern appliances, a media room and a den - and a large, fog-busting lens originally meant to warn mariners away from the shoals 40 miles southwest of Nantucket. Oh, and all the bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms with showers, of course.

A floating lighthouse with rich maritime history, the Nantucket Lightship boasts a custom-designed interior with ample living space and nautical features. Highly-skilled carpenters were commissioned to build the interior in a manner maintaining the structural integrity of the ship. ... The living areas include space for both formal meetings or informal family gatherings.

And if you're not in the market for a houseboat? It would also make a fine nautical museum or charter boat, broker Josie McKenzie writes.

Former state Sen. William Golden of Quincy and his wife Kristen have owned their lightship since 2000, after buying it on eBay.

The Goldens typically berthed the ship at Martha's Vineyard, when not renting it out as a charter. In August, 2009, Golden sailed her to Hyannisport to shine a spotlight until Ted Kennedy was laid to rest.

The boat is not the Goldens' only connection to Boston Harbor. In 1982, as the city of Quincy's attorney, Golden filed the federal lawsuit that led to the creation of the MWRA and the harbor's cleanup.

Don't worry, even if somebody buys the ship and sails it somewhere else, Boston Harbor will still have a Nantucket Lightship, the one that's been docked in East Boston since 2010, where it is slowly undergoing renovations to become a floating museum:

My god what if it was shit brown (instead of red) and said New Beige? How much then? Would the lettering be capital or capsized.

OOOOH TEDDY! If I buy it I will just rename it CUTTYSNARK!!

So in love with this boat, I used to hang out with it during lunch in the early 2000s frequently when I was working in the financial district; it was frequently moored over by the Long Wharf. I have a model of it on my desk.

Pity about the Andrea Doria, but anyone can make a mistake.

You've made your point, such as it is, you don't have to keep repeating it, so no more, thanks.

Really, what is the point?

Money no object, both converted to nice living space, etc... would you rather own:

1) Nantucket Light ship
2) Boston Harbor light

I think lighthouse for me, but the idea of a boat is also cool.

I don't think Graves Light is for sale now, but you never know (currently owned by the same guy who owns all the neon signs on display on the Greenway).

I names the wrong light house, but yes, that's what I meant.

I thought seriously about it for about 15 minutes. It sold for pretty short money. And then I thought how the conversation would go if I were to call a mason for a repair estimate, should he happen to ask, "Will there be room on site to park my truck?"

Boston Light would be awesome.

The state was trying to sell it for scrap, basically.

He took a risk, invested significant money, and saved a significant historical artifact from the scrap heap. I hope he makes some good coin on the deal.

This is UHub. You absolutely cannot expect to make money on a (real estate) light ship investment because housing crunch. Get with it pops!
