Man out on bail on armed-robbery, gun and witnesss-intimidation charges is charged with murder at Hailey Apartments
Uhmari Bufford, 26, was arraigned today on charges he murdered Augusta Carter on Parker Street in the Mildred Hailey Apartments in Jamaica Plain last Wednesday.
Bufford was on bail awaiting charges for robbing a livery driver at gunpoint outside the Mission Park development in June, 2019. The Herald reports that Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins vowed today her office will now seek to have people facing armed-robbery and similar gun charges held without bail pending their trials.
According to the DA's office, Bufford didn't simply shoot Carter, he shot him repeatedly to make sure he was dead:
The victim, Mr. Carter, 45, was among a group of individuals standing in a courtyard in the area of 950 Parker Street shortly before 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21, 2020, when a gunman approached on foot. The assailant shot Mr. Carter multiple times, then stood over the victim’s body and fired twice more before fleeing.
The DA's office adds that in addition to the armed-robbery charges, Bufford was also out on bail while awaiting disposition of two 2020 cases: One for witness intimidation and disturbing the peace in Roxbury, and an indictment in Suffolk Superior Court on firearm charges.
As is usual in murder cases, a judge ordered Bufford held without bail.
Innocent, etc.

Starting today, we won't do
Starting today, we won't do what we promised to get elected.
Actually
This was always a stated part of her campaign:
So, really more like "starting today, we'll actually do what we promised to get elected".
But you are not arguing with
But you are not arguing with the "starting today" part?
Oh absolutely I am!
I think it's pretty garbage that she's only now doing what she said she would do, now that her department has screwed this up.
I just think it's important that we criticize people for the right things here. There's a real issue with bail and how that process works in this country, and Rollins knows that and campaigned on it - and then when she got in power, she just continued to do the same things that prosecutors have been doing for decades. That's incredibly awful no matter what your opinion is on this and I can only hope it leads her to make some more substantial changes.
Fair enough.
Fair enough.
I understand that bail is not for punishment
But when Mr. Bufford was charged for his second gun charge (among others), that should have been enough of a signal that he was (is) a danger to society and not safe to be out on bail.
From November 2018
"Bufford was wanted on an outstanding warrant on charges of Assault with Intent to Murder and Assault and Battery by Means of a Dangerous Weapon (to wit: Knife)."
