Boston women's soccer team to consider changing its new name

The founders of the currently named BOS Nation say they've heard critics of their name:

We want to assure you that we have heard your feedback and are actively listening. We share your high expectations, and together, we will build a storied club that reflects the essence of the beautiful game and the character of our dynamic city.

To that end, we have launched a deliberate process through which we will seek out, listen to, and reflect on input about our team name from fans, supporters, and a group of advisors assembled to reflect a diverse range of voices and perspectives. We are approaching this work with an open mind and will report back as soon as we have more to share.

A name change couldn't come soon enough for Rev. Laura Everett, who thinks there's no question the name needs to change, and immediately, and not just because of a launch that was both transphoboic and insulting to the region's other professional women's sports teams:

"BOS Nation" is now forever tied to a transphobic, exclusionary, and misogynistic launch campaign that somehow managed to offend everyone except the male teams of Boston in its launch. "BOS Nation" is in grave danger of nationalistic usurpation, and already tainted with transphobic exclusion.

We’ve done plenty of scrutiny.

BOS Nation must go for the team to survive.

Crime on the common, rwfgy AND the women's soccer team still can't settle on a name.

2024 just can't end soon enough

Why does Bob Kraft not want them for his new stadium? Not right.

If he can't control it all, he isn't involved.

Those phone books which he sits to make himself look bigger when the mandatory CBS shot of him at each Pats game cost money.

If you can't control the revenue stream to the max, then what's the point - See Jeremy Jacobs. You own the team, the stadium, and most importantly, the $64 double vodka shots at a Maroon 5 concert.

Just stop. It’s not like she or anyone else for that matter would be going to the games anyhow. Just tired, strike that, exhausted with always turning things into something bigger than they need to be so people can get a pound of flesh.

Laura goes to nearly every pro women's team game there is in Boston. She's at nearly every Fleet game, she goes to Renegades games, and she's at the Garden every time the Sun come up to play here instead of Mohegan.

She's run her own blog for years: https://bostonwomenssports.com/

She's got press creds for most of the leagues.

But I don't need to prove her bona fides to some podunk Anon. Go pound sand, you shitter.

Agreed. A cudgel too far.

and confirm all of our deepest suspicions that the "male teams of Boston" were _not_ offended. Gee, do you think maybe just a few of them aren't transphobic, and _were_ offended at having their names included in that launch?

I get that you have an axe to grind, but you're not helping your cause by condemning the greatest sports teams in the history of sports and everything else.

Anyway, someone in a previous story suggested Boston Athenas. Great name, refers to a great (and still relevant) nickname for Boston, doesn't mention beans, "United" or "F.C." They should call the team the Boston Athenas. That's it. There's no better name. Arguing this point is silly.

The fact that "too many balls" is immediately associated with the less than 1% of the population that is F2M transgender....rather than the 50% that is born with balls is...cringe. It just makes it feel like this is very much not for males to enjoy.

And just in general what on what authority does she know the male teams aren't offended? Because they had 1/2 players in the launch video?

That statement from BOS Nation when it as made earlier and that statement by the Rev. Laura Everett is offensive to me. Honestly, and maybe that makes me a bad person. I'm sorry.

And I'm still very much offended how these wealthy white women have come in and just essentially commandeered a space meant for inner city football players who are already marginalized in the local sports landscape relative to their suburban peers. To the very vocal objection of many in that community.

This is a troll worthy comment, claiming to be offended by someone else taking offense and pointing out transphobia and misogyny.

What exactly offends you about this? Are you “sick of hearing about it?” That may not make you a “bad person,” but it surely marks you as an asshole.

Kick rocks.

One can only hope the team folds.

Go build that shit somewhere else, and stop trying to take from city kids. If they tried to pull this stunt in a wealthy town, everyone would be up in arms.

I liked the idea of "Boston Banshees" for the hockey team so we should convince them to change to that and then the soccer team can be the Fleet which makes more sense for a game played on foot instead of skates anyway.

and just as fanatic, in a postmodern way.

Sheesh, what a rant. Is that the way to tend to her flock?

Boston Fleet? A Fleet could be a group of Warships !

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
