Man charged with trying to light a police cruiser and a Civic on fire today

Boston Police report arresting a man they say used blankets to try to light two cars on fire in Downtown Crossing and the Back Bay today - first a police cruiser and then a Honda Civic.

Police say Daniel Lucey 40, pushed a blanket under an unoccupied BPD cruiser parked at West and Mason streets and set fire to the blanket shortly before noon, police say, adding bystanders pulled the blanket out and stomped out the fire as they watched the suspect run down Mason Street. Police say two officers had parked the cruiser there to respond to an unrelated 91l call.

At approximately 12:28 PM officers in the area of Arlington Street and Boylston Street observed smoke coming from a blanket that was placed under a Honda Civic.

Officers were able to locate Daniel Lucey walking in Copley Square where he was placed under arrest and charged with 2 Counts of Arson of a Motor Vehicle.

This is the second time in three weeks that Lucey has been charged with trying to set a police vehicle on fire.

Innocent, etc.

His name sounds familiar. Didn't he try and light something else on fire recently? Either way, not cool

Thank you. I should have looked myself but was feeling lazy. One of those types of days

Rollins won't prosecute, and though I don't always agree with her, he probably doesn't really belong in jail. (Not to mention the $50k or whatever we pay/year)

We don't have "mental hospitals" anymore, a'la McLean.

He appears to be moderately dangerous on the streets.

As a society, it seems like we have no good alternatives for whatever seems to be ailing Mr Lucey.

The man needs help.

...yet he was back to his old stomping grounds for more just three weeks later. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to police people like this.

This is exactly why so many have been saying that "policing" people like this is the wrong approach entirely. It seems pretty clear that this is a mental health issue.
