Four cops injured arresting a self-described Nazi shouting racist slurs inside Boston City Hall, DA says

Williams in Roxbury

A Bridgewater man was ordered held in lieu of $25,000 bail today at his arraignment on charges he segued from screaming slurs at people inside City Hall to shouting at and then biting and punching Boston police officers trying to get him out of the building, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Michael Williams, 51, was charged with two counts of assault and battery on a police officer, assault with intent to maim, trespassing, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, the DA's office says. In addition to setting bail, Boston Municipal Court Judge Paul Treseler ordered Williams committed to Bridgewater State Hospital for observation.

The incident comes a week after Williams grabbed the microphone at a Roxbury community meeting about White Stadium, declared himself a Nazi and unleashed a torrent of complaints about numerous topics that had nothing to do with the White Stadium issue - including alleged BPD harassment because he supported the destruction of the Twin Towers in 2001. He then threw the microphone to the floor and stormed out.

According to the DA's office:

At about 9:43 a.m. this morning Boston police responded to City Hall for an officer in trouble with a combative subject. Upon arrival, officers asked the man, later identified as Williams, to leave the building. A witness accused Williams of shouting racial slurs at a group of people visiting the building.

Williams initially complied but soon began arguing with officers. Officers informed Williams if he did not leave he would be arrested. An officer asked Williams, “Are you choosing to be arrested?” and Williams stated, “Yes, I would rather be arrested.”

While trying to arrest Williams, an officer placed his right arm on his shoulder to place him in handcuffs. Williams bit the officer’s hand, causing severe damage, including heavy bleeding and parts of the skin and tissue to hang off the hand. Williams then freed his arms and grabbed and punched two officers with a closed fist, then briefly fled. Officers grabbed Williams and brought him to the ground. He continued to resist arrest until other officers arrived. Williams continued to resist officers during the booking process at Area A-1 station.

Four officers were transported by Boston EMS to Mass General Hospital to be treated for their injuries.

Innocent, etc.

U hub, this is not a good look. This person is obviously in need of help. It’s a shame they didn’t get help after the first incident.

There is no need to publicly shame and post photos of a person like this

First, I'll agree he appears to be in need of some help.

But there are a lot of people with mental-health issues who do not become violent to the point of physically attacking or threatening others in public settings (also see this guy).

Now it's news. See this report and this one from people at the White Stadium meeting.

People have a right to go to a public place without fear of being attacked - and a right to know who might be a threat (and yes, he's not a threat right now because he's at Bridgewater).

He called Catherine Vitale, saying the police treated him unfairly, and he totally wasn't screaming slurs at Asian kids, because he's married to an Asian.

Might be they're only letting people with accounts see posts.

Where is his "I Love Trump" shirt? Where are his Trump inspired shoes? Was he just angry that he didn't get his Trump Bible fast enough and so, in Trumpian fashion, blames anyone and everyone for anything and everything?

It desperately needed to be shut down.

Institutionalization can be very harmful to a person’s well being, no matter how benevolent and professionally managed.

Institutionalization can be very good for the well being of the people whom it protects from the misbehavior of people who are unfit to be walking around free.

I'm not disagreeing that underfunding and malevolent neglect turned many of our mental institutions into unspeakable hellholes, but uncontrollably violent people need to be physically separated from the rest of us.

I was not suggesting the public should be put in danger. Institutionalization of even those of sound mind, long hospitalizations or long stays in rehabs for injuries for example, is detrimental.
I know this because of caring for a relative with mobility issues. More than one social worker has told me that stays longer than two weeks in rehabs or hospitals start to affect all patients in a bad way and that generally people recover from after 3 to 7 day back in their own homes.
It’s the loss of autonomy that has adverse effects on everyone.
