2022 elections
The State House News Service reports one one man's effort to get a question on the 2022 ballot that would return happy hours to Massachusetts after 30 years. We find out Sept. 1 if the proposal passes constitutional muster as judged by the state Attorney General office; if it does, he'll then have to collect signatures to get it on the ballot.
About the same time that acting Mayor Kim Janey was announcing for-reals free service on the 28 route today, at-large Councilor Michelle Wu, also running for four years in that fifth-floor office overlooking Faneuil Hall, was announcing a plan for even more ambitious free bus service, along with the boffins at Northeastern's Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy. Ben Downing, who spent 10 years as a state senator from Pittsfield, but who now lives in East Boston, where he works for a renewable-energy company, announced this morning he will run for governor next year. Danielle Allen, a professor at Harvard, is looking at running next year as well.

Massachusetts Beverage Business reports Cumberland Farms has abandoned its plans for a ballot question this fall that asks voters to let it install beer and wine coolers in all its stores because it's just too darned busy concentrating on protecting its workers and customers from Covid-19.
