Up in her cups

Alison reports:

I love driving south on Rt. 3A (Cambridge St.) in Burlington, if only for one reason: On the edge of a playing field near Burlington High, you can almost always see a message on the chain link fence.

A message in styrofoam cups.

Each cup, one per link, forms part of a letter, and the letters always spell out something positive ...

Actually, the message she blogged about is kind of sad. It is part of a tribute to a 14-year-old Burlington girl who was killed in a car accident earlier this summer. All summer long the fence, which is usually used for sport-team-related messages during the school year, has been a collecting spot for bouquets of flowers beneath this sad farewell. The girl would have been a freshman at Burlington High School this fall.

I hadn't realized the story behind the current message when I wrote the "Cups O' Burnin' Love." It truly is tragic, especially speaking as the parent of a child not much younger than Jeska.

I first noticed the cup messages when I moved here four years ago and took my son to a KinderCare on Cambridge St. Although in this case the message forms a kind of shrine, as Brian pointed out when commenting on my blog, I've always enjoyed the fact that they're positive (in my experience--I could have missed some). No equivalent of "Yankees Suck"--rather, upbeat messages about a school team or a happy birthday message to a teacher or a love note.

I thank Brian for telling me the story of the current message, unbearably sad though it is.
