Ever click on something and then instantly go 'Oops, why did I do that'?

I did that this morning - and managed to wipe out three+ years of neighborhood/town tags for every single post on Universal Hub (on the plus side: I discovered the database here works REALLY fast). No, I don't have a back up of the database from which to restore them. Because I'm a dolt.

Fortunately, the posts themselves are still here (hooray for data stored in different tables!), and I can use other tags to retag a lot of stuff (for example, I've already added "Cambridge" as a tag to every post that contains the phrase "Cambridge Police"). But in the meantime, if some of the neighborhood and city/town pages seem a bit skimpy, that's why (also in the meantime, I need to read up on how to set up an automated MySQL backup, since I clearly can't be trusted around a database).

Oh, ouch. :( Funny how easily so much can be destroyed on these here webtubes.

Dude... Raid 1. Data is cheap. There is no excuse...

Last I knew, "Delete" was the cheapest database command possible.

The server's physically in Pittsburgh. So what I'll probably do is set up a cron to do a nightly mysqldump and gzip, then set up the Windows equivalent of a cron to grab it by FTP. That way, I'll have two copies.

It wasn't even a direct database delete. I clicked on the wrong link on the Web, oy.

RAID1 doesn't protect from user error; it is for physical media failures ONLY.

I suppose that's a fair point.

All the fancy hardware in the world, sadly, still does not solve the PEBKAC problem.

If you're still using Drupal (and it certainly seems you are), I highly recommend the backup_migrate module. It's a gem, although it could stand to have its security improved somewhat.

I'd forgotten all about that module (so, yep, still using Drupal). Will install tonight and get it running.

They only do what you tell them to!

Oh, and to answer your question, Yes, but my experiences in that vein usually involve my online brokerage account, or posting in a blog/forum.

That's the difference between having a hobby, and being a professional. Go back to blogging about poor people eating at trendy restaurants.

That's the beauty of using Drupal, it lets you rise to the level of your own incompetence.

Professional?

I suppose you hope nobody has ever checked out your blog. I'll take content over "most hoopidty doopidty" platform any time.

I've destroyed much bigger systems than this. Fear me!
