Joy

Celebration on the steps of the BPL in Copley Square last night:

Bijan Sabet: Happiness is waking your kids up and telling them that Barack Obama is our next President of the United States.

Lisa: How amazing to be alive when history is being made.

Great photo of a scene inside the official Boston Democratic party.

Anali: It's a brand new day.

Ari Herzog: Dreams aren't fantasies anymore.

Maryse: Pass me a tissue, will you?

Kristen, who normally writes about the Sox, joins in:

In the parlance of the sports we all know and love: good on ya, America. You knocked it out of the park. I'm proud of you.

Brian McFadden: Holy fucking shit:

Tammy: My faith in this country is restored.

Harvard Square last night.

Ron Newman: Thank you, United States of America, for becoming more like Davis Square today:

Apple Foot: Tonight I feel better about my country:

I believe that a man has been elected who still holds those American ideals in his heart. I believe that the very fact of his election is a declaration that America is still the land of the free.

I am not a religious person; I like to say I was raised a lapsed Catholic. When I heard Charles Gibson declare Obama the president-elect, my immediate reaction was to cross myself and say, "Praise God."

Colin: I feel like I've been holding my breath for the past eight years:

And tonight I can finally breathe again. ...

Leslie Turek: I'm dancing with joy (in my heart, anyway - too tired to dance for real).

The Outraged Liberal wants to work with the other side:

... The repudiation of George Walker Bush -- a faux conservative who thought swagger translated into authority -- should send thoughtful Americans of all political persuasions into thoughtful conversations about how we can work together instead of fight apart. ...

Ned Batchelder writes that now the hard work begins:

I don't know if that is possible, since it will require effort from everyone, including the people. Reining in an overwhelmingly Democrat congress may be difficult, but it is crucial. Of all the reasons Obama won, the most important may be that people were punishing the Republicans for their excesses when they controlled all of government. If the Democrats are smart, they will learn from that. If they do not, we may just see another whipsaw election next time around. ...

Lori Magno: I am flabbergasted:

Amazed, amused, shocked, happy. After an evening of quiet hope and expectations (and great friends who prepared a wonderful meal,) to finally see the election called for Barack Obama was stunning. ...

Dr. T writes down her memories of last night:

... I treasure most of all remembering the faces and voices of my own children as they learned about the electoral process and participated in the campaign, and the exhilaration of seeing, at last, someone who strikes me as a loving family man with intelligence, character, and vision elected to the White House. ...

Overmatter: There's a lot to be said for hope and majesty.

Sassy Sundry: This country finally turned away from fear and embraced hope.

Margaret woke her young son up last night:

It won't mean much to him today. But he'll remember that his mom woke him up to show him the birth of a new world.

Jef Taylor addresses the rest of the world:

It's us, the United States.

Will you have us back now?

Rhea Becker reports on Obama celebrations at Rhythm & Muse and at the Alchemist (also a Sonia Chang-Diaz party):

... People were crying. Black people. White people. It was so moving. Walking home down the main drag of Jamaica Plain at one in the morning, people were greeting each other with horns honking, hand slaps, and yells of "Obama!" I have hope for this country today. ...

Andrew Teman reports:

... So last night, when Obama sealed the deal, a pretty cool thing happened. Instead of drunk dickheads from BC heaving celebratory kegs from the windows of Brighton three-deckers, we were treated to a lot of live music, impromptu marching bands, and a full on parade in the streets of our neighborhood. Dixie land style bands, drums, horns, string quintets ... it was pretty surreal, and all awesome. ...

Thanks for the video link! The Copley vid was mine. Sorry about the quality, first Youtube and a terrible camera. I don't live in Boston, but i'm gonna move after seeing the energy of that situation, no joke. Great city.
