How the city helped create a giant hole in the ground

Donovan Slack at the Globe shows how the city let the developer of the Gaping Maw skirt the city's own zoning codes in an attempt to revive Downtown Crossing.

Hardley surpring, and it shouldn't be to the Globe.
Anyone who has ever built anything in Boston - or tried- knows that zoning rules are bent, broken, changed and ignored at the whim of the BRA and the Mayor depending on whether they like your project or not. That the Globe seems surprised at this says a lot.
Metaphor time!
Whichever candidate is able to turn the hole in the middle of Downtown Crossing into a metaphor for Menino's tenure will be the next mayor.
Globe
A good example of what should be the bread&butter journalism of the Globe.
Random bloggers and commenters (like myself) will throw around speculation and unsupported assignations of blame, but the Globe trudges through actual investigation, and then tries to err on the side of fairness and objectivity when reporting.
why we need the Globe
Agree absolutely.
Donovan Slack has shown some genuine reporting chops, and this is a fine example.
Someone already said it at
Someone already said it at Boston.com in the comments, but I will repeat it because it needs to be. The debacle in Chinatown with the destruction of the old Gaeity (wish I could spell that) Theater and the upsetting hole that is still where it used to be can be set directly at Mumbleinos feet. Oh how I would love to see him pay for it! He has just got to go.
