Same-sex marriage up for debate again

It's Constitutional Convention day at the State House again, and the legislators might decide whether to let voters vote on same-sex marriage - or just adjourn and let the issue die.

Mass. Marrier analyzes the situation:

... The solution is simple and needs to be at the top of the agenda for the new legislature -- reform the ballot-initiative process to return it to its original noble purpose, as a check against legislative errors of judgment.

In addition, the existing prohibition against an initiative intended to reverse a court decision should have prevented this divisive move from getting this far. That is the reeking legacy of Attorney General Tom Reilly in permitting it. Shame on the incompetent and amoral officials such as he.

This dreadful piece of theocractic bigotry should lose today. We don't need one or two more years of playing this game with the hate mongers.

The Outraged Liberal applauds House Speaker Sal DiMasi for trying to adjourn the session:

The decision to go the petition route was a parliamentary tactic. So is adjourning the ConCon.

On Squaring the Boston Globe, Harry sees legislative cockroaches scurrying to subvert the will of the people - along with the equally six-legged editors at the Boston Globe:

... Maybe we should just let the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court have all powers (if duly advised by the Globe editors, of course). Indeed the Globe has little taste for the democratic process, save when the results are to their liking, as they were last Tuesday. Churchill said that democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others. The Globe forgets his exception. ...

Dee notes that since the original Supreme Judicial Court ruling, voters have consistently turned out legislators opposed to the ruling:

... Please don't allow discriminatory language to be written into the oldest constitution in the country. Please don't put minority rights up to a popular vote. Please don't allow children growing up with same-sex parents feel like their families are unworthy of the same rights as others. ...
