Proposed bike lanes on new bridge

MassDOT officials tonight showed off preliminary plans for the replacement for the West Roxbury Parkway bridge over the train tracks between Holy Name Rotary and Belgrade Avenue - plans that include a new center turning lane and a bicycle lane in either direction, even though the bike lanes will initially be of little use since the parkway doesn't currently have any marked bike lanes. West Roxbury bridge in poor shape

Westie bridge is crumbling down, crumbling down, crumbling down, my fair lady.

MassDOT plans to replace the bridge that carries West Roxbury Parkway between the Holy Name rotary and Belgrade Avenue over the Needham Line train track sometime in 2024, following a July inspection that found it in "poor" condition. Read more.

A developer's proposal to replace the old Folsom Funeral Home at 59-63 Belgrade Ave. with a four-story, 31-unit apartment building won a go-ahead today from the Zoning Board of Appeal, which approved it 6-1. Read more.

Shortly after 5 p.m, gunfire erupted on Belgrade Avenue near Aldrich Street in Roslindale. At least one house hit by a bullet - and the driver of a car with its front windshield blasted with bullet holes fled the scene towards West Roxbury Parkway. Read more.

Roxbury Prep told supporters today it's given up on plans to build a new high school on Belgrade Avenue at the Roslindale/West Roxbury line, four years after it first proposed the idea, only to be confronted by both angry residents and a BPDA bureaucracy that kept the plans bottled up far longer than it took to get a 55-story skyscraper downtown approved. The owner of Silva's Brazilian Market on Belgrade Avenue at Walworth Street wants to sell the shop and its beer and wine license to Lorenzo Mercado, who is proposing to re-open it as the Punta Cana Beer & Wine Market, with a closing time of 11 p.m.

The proposed license transfer goes before the Boston Licensing Board on Wednesday, in hearings that begin at 1 p.m.

CommonWealth breaks the news, which comes after the BPDA postponed a public meeting on the proposal - nearly two years after the school first filed plans. The school says it might still push for the Roslindale site on the Roslindale/West Roxbury line if it can't find another location elsewhere.

Nearly two years after Roxbury Prep filed plans to replace the old Clay Chevrolet place on Belgrade Avenue with a new high school, the BPDA had scheduled a public meeting on the proposal. But BPDA planners sent out word Friday that the meeting, scheduled for this Tuesday, has been called off. Read more.
