There are only 160 dockworkers in Boston, but the strike is expected to affect about 12,000 jobs in the area, including tugboat and truck drivers and delivery workers.
CommonWealth Beacon considers the decision by Sean O’Brien, a Medford native who worked his way up from Teamsters Local 25 in Charlestown to become president of the national union, not to have the union make an endorsement in this year's presidential election. The Dorchester Reporter reports teachers at the Neighborhood House Charter School, which has 800 K-12 students, have voted to form a union and to affiliate with the BTU, which represents BPS educators.
Worker at the REI store on Park Drive voted 44-23 on Monday to join the United Food and Commercial Workers, Local 1445. Unlike some other national companies we could mention, REI, which is run as a co-op, says it welcomes the new union.
A union representing 13,000 Boston-area janitors and the organization representing local building owners reached a four-year contract deal tonight that will stave off a planned strike.

Last night before the final debate in the campaign to fill the vacant US Senate seat the usual show of force by both candidates appeared outside UMASS Boston.

The Boston Herald reports Boston Globe union officials are making noises about standing firm on concessions requested by NYTCo:
"The general attitude is, 'When is this going to stop?'" a top Globe union official said yesterday. "The unions are going to tell management, 'We've worked with you as much as we can. Now you are taking it too far.'"
Most city unions are refusing to accept wage freezes, so Tom Menino plans to announce specific layoff and service cutback plans next week, the Globe reports.
