Sign on door of North End post office: Not open

A roving UHub photographer notes the post office on Hanover Street in the North End has a sign on the door saying it would be opening late, at 10:30 a.m., but that they still weren't open when she swung by at 2 p.m.

Patrick Mendoza, the now former owner of Monica's Trattoria on Prince Street in the North End, today pleaded guilty to charges that he tried murdering a guy with whom he had beef in front of Modern Pastry on Hanover Street last July 12, Oscar Margáin reports from Suffolk Superior Court. Read more.

A Suffolk Superior Court judge today ordered Patrick Mendoza, the now former owner of Monica's Trattoria on Prince Street, held without bail until at least Sept. 11 - with no date yet set for his trial on charges he shot at somebody outside Modern Pastry on Hanover Street last July, according to court records. A Suffolk Superior Court judge last week concluded Patrick Mendoza, charged with trying to plug somebody on Hanover Street, was no longer an immediate threat to society and so could be released from jail to modified home release while awaiting trial - he is allowed to leave home for work or for medical or legal appointments. Banner across Salem Street urging people to call 311 to complaint about outdoor patios

Some restaurant owners in the North End have thrown up banners in the neighborhood to get visitors to make reservations for outdoor dining via 311, which might confuse out of towners who don't know 311 doesn't handle restaurant reservations. Read more.

Boston Restaurant Talk reports the owners of Giacomo's and Riccardo's are looking to open a lobster place at 204 Hanover St. in the North End. They go before the Boston Licensing Board on Wednesday for permission to buy a liquor license from another restaurant.

WBZ reports on an incident at Hanover and Commercial streets Tuesday night where a worker at Rocco's ran outside and chased a hit-and-run driver who got out and then ran after slamming into another car.

The owners of 21 North End restaurants and the North End Chamber of Commerce yesterday sued the city over its 2022 fees for restaurants in the neighborhood that wanted to use public sidewalks and streets for patio seating - and its ban on such patios last year - alleging the Wu administration and a local residents' groups hate Italians for some reason. NorthEnd.page reports that the Connah Store, which never failed to give tourists something to chuckle about as they sauntered up and down Hanover Street, but which also provided a late-night spot for both locals and restaurant workers to stock up on some essentials, has closed for the last time, victim of a huge rent increase. Venerable North End restaurant owner Frank DePasquale will be expanding his neighboring Dolce ice-cream and coffee place into the space.

The Massachusetts Veterans of Foreign Wars yesterday asked a judge to order Post 144, possibly no longer on Hanover Street in the North End, to immediately hand over its financial books for a deep audit of what's been going on with all the money the post has collected in recent years - with several hundred thousand dollars, including money meant to help veterans in need, unaccounted for. WCVB interviewed Rocco Giovenello, whom they say was the man standing outside Modern Pastry when Patrick Mendoza, according to police, tried to shoot him to death Wednesday night. He and the Mendozas have history, he said.
