The Boston City Council yesterday approved a change in a regulation designed to protect the Emerald Necklace from being overwhelmed by tall buildings so that a developer can build a 28-story, 400-unit apartment building at 2 Charlesgate West, next to a little used portion of the Emerald Necklace along the Bowker Overpass. The City Council yesterday approved holding a hearing at which to consider ways to combat what some said was drug use and related violence that are so bad they are making some residents think of moving away and of threatening Boston's tourism industry. Read more.

The Boston City Council this week agreed to consider a proposal by Councilor Sharon Durkan (Fenway, Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Mission Hill) to amend an ordinance aimed at preventing some city parks and parkways from being overwhelmed by tall buildings next to them to allow a tall residential building next to the Charlesgate section of the Emerald Necklace. City Councilor Sharon Durkan (Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Fenway, Mission Hill) says it's time for Boston to set up a licensing office to all the companies just dying to show off their Boston cred on clothing, mugs and anything else you can slap a bold underlined sans-serif B or some good old-fashioned "Sicut Patribus Sit Deus Nobis" - or even just a design featuring the city-owned Faneuil Hall. The Boston City Council agreed today to study the idea of getting into the bus business, with small shuttle-type buses, to serve routes - and hours - that the T doesn't. Read more.

Boston City Council President Ed Flynn sent two proposed resolutions on Israel and Palestine to a committee for further study and hearings.

The council's committee of the whole - basically, the entire council - will now schedule hearings on a resolution by Councilor Michael Flaherty (at large) to support Israel and condemn Hamas and a separate one by Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson (Roxbury) calling for an immediate ceasefire in the region. Durkan was elected to finish the term of Kenzie Bok, who left to become the new head of the BHA. Durkan will have to run again in November to win her own two-year term.

The Boston Sun reports on Sharon Durkan's victory over Montez Haywood to represent District 8 (Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Mission Hill, Fenway) for the next few months as a replacement for Kenzie Bok. The two will reprise their battle in November for a two-year term.

The Boston Sun recaps the forum with Montez Haywood and Sharon Durkan, running in a July 25 special election to replace Kenzie Bok as city councilor in District 8 (Beacon Hill, Back Bay, Bay Village, Fenway and Mission Hill). They're competing for a term that runs until just Jan. 1, when the winner of the November regular election will take the seat.
