City Realty last week unwrapped some of its ideas for the 5-acre office complex on Rte. 9 in Brookline at the Newton line it now owns: Replacing it completely with a new complex featuring a 20-story hotel/condo tower at the city line along with two shorter buildings with apartments, retail space and medical offices, all clustered around a "town square" the length of two football fields with a stream-like "water feature" that would encourage visitors to sit and enjoy themselves. We were out and about on errands today and figured we'd end the trip with a supermarket run for some barbecue fixings. We wound up at the Chestnut Hill Star, and, yeesh, was that place empty.

Wicked Local Brookline reports selectmen put off a vote on letting a Peet's replace the Starbucks on Rte. 9 in Chestnut Hill after neighbors complained Starbucks customers were slobby bad drivers and selectmen decided they wanted the landlord to explain how he will keep the Peet's from replicating the mistakes of the Starbucks.
The new supermarket, built on the site of the departed Omni Foods on Rte. 9, holds its grand opening on April 27. However, the liquor-store part of the supermarket opens March 29.
Rain turned to black ice overnight, causing cars to crash and overturn across the region and sending pedestrians and bicyclists plunging to the ground.
Rte. 9 eastbound by the Chestnut Hill Mall was shut after a pickup truck slid under the back of a tractor trailer around 7:20 a.m. State Police report the driver of the pickup suffered serious injuries but was conscious when extricated by firefighters.
The Newton Fire Department reports it evacuated part of the Street mall on Rte. 9 after workers hit a gas main in front of the Container Store around 10 a.m. About 35 minutes later, National Grid managed to shut the gas off, freeing mall workers to return to their jobs.
