Longtime Beat the Press panelist Dan Kennedy reports WGBH has canceled Emily Rooney's last show, after 22 years.
Emily Rooney
WGBH's "Beat the Press" started tonight with an apology by Emily Rooney for the way she dismissed complaints by media professionals about the lack of minority representation at PBS in general and the way that all the time given over to documentaries by Ken Burns makes it near impossible for other documentary makers to get their work aired. Read more.
WGBH's Emily Rooney interviewed fired WBUR/NPR host Tom Ashbrook, will air it on her media show on Channel 2 tonight, but tells Eagan and Braude that Ashbrook wants to get back into broadcasting, maybe starting with a podcast, so she doesn't think he'll sue 'BUR for firing him.
Braude, meanwhile, acknowledged that, yes, Boston has an NPR station besides WGBH, but says that other station needs to learn what a joke is. Read more.
Or as she called it last week, the Big Dig, whose reporting on the racist history of the Red Sox she didn't much care for.
Oliver had a couple of choice words for the WGBH host on his way to making a point about net neutrality.
This evening, Emily Rooney at WGBH reported that John Henry and Globe CEO Mike Sheehan ignored warnings from their own circulation department that the new home-delivery system could fail.
Henry fired back tonight in a tweet:
WGBH now has added a fiction writer to its news lineup. Makes for great stories!
This just in from Emily Rooney:
@EmilyRooneyWGBH No Boston 2024 can now go back to doing their specialty work - stopping traffic in Dewey Square

Rooney confessed to being a tad nervous.
"My heart was beating out of my chest! How do I figure out the little ticket thing?"
H/t Gustavo.
WGBH announced today that Emily Rooney will be stepping down in January as host of Greater Boston (she'll be staying on as host of "Beat the Press" and as a special correspondent).
WGBH says its hiring the former WTKK talkers to talk away between noon and and 2 p.m. on weekdays on its "Boston Public Radio" show. The move frees up Callie Crossley and Emily Rooney, who currently hold down the microphones then, to do other things, although the station says they'll continue to get some words in edgewise on the show. 'GBH adds that Edgar B. Herwick III will continue to contribute to the show after the changeover on Feb. 25.
Rooney interviews City Councilor John Connolly on expired food and inventory management in Boston Public Schools; she doesn't mind a little freezer burn on her meat and wonders why a city councilor would hold hearings on the issue:
Meanwhile, BPS has released a letter from a childhood-obesity group praising Boston schools for their work in getting kids healthier and praising BPS nutrition programs as a national model.
H/t to John Keith, who actually watches Greater Boston on a regular basis.
Too crime ridden, too filled with people who aren't like her, too far on the other side of 128, apparently.
Last night on "Greater Boston," Rooney chatted with Donna Latson Gittens about why real-estate sales are up in Dorchester and Jamaica Plain.
Tonight on "Greater Boston," Emily Rooney discusses that pressing Boston-area issue - what Tiger Woods will say in his scripted event tomorrow.
Also: "The animal ambassador of SeaWorld & Busch Gardens joins Emily along with some of her friends: a baby kangaroo, a kookaburra, and American alligator and Magellanic penguins." Busch Gardens is on the South Shore, right?
OK, OK, I got sucked in and actually watched "Greater Boston" and its expose on Balloon Boy.
Beats me, but Emily Rooney will be discussing the case tonight on "Greater Boston," which describes itself as tackling "the region's top news stories with original reporting and comprehensive analysis."
So I look forward to her "in-depth discussions with guests from diverse perspectives" (in this case, two lawyers she dug up) that will take us "beyond the day's headlines," such as, oh, letting her explain her fantasy about punching Balloon Boy's mom in the face and knocking all her teeth out, because right now, that's about the only original thing about this case that's gone untackled.
WBUR should either finally hire him so people can start donating to WGBH instead or they should announce they're not hiring him so people can stop getting heartburn.
They'll need it for all the hate e-mail zinging its way to John Carroll now that the national Democratic blogs have picked up the story of how he and his Beat the Press-ters blew the whole blog-accountability issue the other day (see here, here and here):
