Old North Church

J.L. Bell introduces us to the cherubs of Old North Church - and alerts us to a talk next Wednesday by the conservator who is leading the effort to restore all those cute little cheeks you'll just want to pinch, only you shouldn't.

If you want to pen your condolences, you should head over to Old North Church - yes, the place with the lanterns and all - starting Monday. The British consulate announced:

The British Consulate in Boston is opening a condolence book for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Old North Church in Boston (193 Salem Street). It will open on Monday 12 September and stay open through Wednesday 14 September from 10am to 4pm.

Walter Baker in Dorchester is normally the only chocolate guy people think of in Boston, but it turns out the North End had a chocolate maker of its own. The Old North Church reports it's won a $13,000 Forrest E. Mars, Jr. Chocolate History Research Grant from, yes, the maker of Mars Bars, to study the life of Capt. Newark Jackson, a parishioner who owned a chocolate mill and store in the North End back in Colonial days.

The church will also use the money to research colonial cacao trade routes.

Tremont Street plaque where you can see Old North Church

This plaque is embedded in the sidewalk on the Tremont Street side of the Parker House. It's easy to miss - who looks down while walking down that particularly busy sidewalk? - but once you see it, you just know you have to stop and take a look.

And for years, your view was, in fact, of Old North Church, just to the left of City Hall. But now, well, look at what Aaron Helfand saw this morning when he stood on the plaque and looked out:

Tags at the Boston Public Library

The BPL's main library in Copley Square currently has an exhibit (in the old, McKim wing) of memorials left by runners and visitors after the Marathon last year. At the end of your walk are several budding trees - and blank tags on which you can write a new message.

At the Old North Church in the North End, you'll find another collection of tags - representing the dog tags of soldiers lost in Afghanistan and Iraq. K.M. Peterson visited the memorial garden recently:

Old North Church

The Massachusetts Appeals Court ruled today that the group that runs free tours of Old North Church is not liable for the injuries a Georgia tourist suffered when she tripped on a pew riser in 2006, because it's covered under a state law that exempts sites that offer free access or tours from injury liability.

NorthEndWaterfront.com reports Old North Church is opening two restrooms to the public on a trial basis - with a suggested donation of $1 per visit. Finding a place to go in the tourist-dependent North End has long been a challenge.

Gives new meaning to '1 if by land, 2 if by sea.'
