A Springfield man who orchestrated a ring of catalytic-converter thieves that operated across two states - including in Newton, Waltham and Needham - was sentenced this week to ten years in federal prison, the US Attorney's office reports, adding the arrests of ring members last year has meant a significant decrease in catalytic-converter thefts. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency reports Orthodox students at the heavily Jewish Waltham university are verklempt at what they consider a punch in the kishkes, a furshlugginer two-page school ad, in the Sunday Times magazine, no less, headlined "Brandeis was founded by Jews. But it's anything but orthodox." The school responded that if only the students would read the whole megillah, they'd see it was just a light-hearted attempt to show the school's roots come from the totality of the Jewish mishpocha.

Federal officials today announced the arrests of several men they say spent recent years detaching catalytic converters from vehicles across Massachusetts for sale outside the state - led by a man who apparently never watched The Wire, because part of the evidence against him consists of extensive notes the feds say he kept on "the extensive criminal conspiracy that he orchestrated." Dr. Jacquelyn Starer, an Ashland gynecologist and addiction-recovery specialist affiliated with Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain, was arrested today on charges she didn't just enter the Capitol during the Jan. 6 attempted putsch, she punched a Washington cop in the left side of her head. WBZ reports a bus carrying Brandeis students crashed into several trees on South Street at the Waltham/Weston line last night. Authorities say the bus was bringing students back from a hockey game at Northeastern, although Brandeis itself says the bus was part of the school's regular weekend shuttle service to and from Boston and Cambridge.
