Steam plant on fire

The Boston Fire Department reports that firefighters who responded to an alarm at the Veolia steam plant at 165 Kneeland St. around 7:30 p.m. found fire on multiple floors in the eight-story plant. Read more.

The Boston Fire Department reports firefighters responded to 99 Summer St., near Kingston Street, around 5:30 a.m. after "e steam leak earlier sprayed unknown debris in the area." Read more.

The Supreme Judicial Court ruled today the city of Boston was wrong to try tax Veolia Energy's network of steam pipes through Boston Proper, ruling that, collectively, they are parts of a "great integral machine," which have been exempt from taxation since an 1866 ruling. Read more.

The Massachusetts Appeals Court ruled today that Veolia, which generates steam at a Chinatown plant, owes the city of Boston $2.2 million in taxes for the 2015 fiscal year because it applied for a tax abatement via letters attached to its quarterly tax payments rather than through an official abatement form. The Zoning Board of Appeals today agreed with a request from the company that wants to put a large electronic billboard on the Veolia plant on Kneeland Street to defer any hearing until June, after a representative from the company acknowledged the company's having just a wee bit of trouble getting anybody in Chinatown to support the thing. Cambridge Police say there won't be anything to be alarmed about on Saturday when you see large clouds of steam erupting out of the Veolia power plant in Kendall Square on Saturday.

Veolia Energy will be conducting a procedure known as steam blowing Saturday, May 30, between 8:00am-6:00pm. ... This operation involves flowing steam through a pipe for the purpose of pipe cleaning. The cleaning will result in large clouds of steam, which may cause curiosity and/or phone calls from the general public.

Veolia, the international corporation that has the contract to operate Boston-owned school buses, continues its battle against Boston bus drivers' union representative USW 8751 with an assist from the Boston Police Department.

Firefighters began evacuating 76 South Street around 9:40 a.m. when a steam pipe under the street failed as only a steam pipe can, turning the building into an instant shvitz with steam pouring into it.

A hazmat team was also called in, because old pipes could be lined with asbestos.
