Dead fish in the Mystic River

Michael Marshall went out for his usual afternoon jog in the Mystic River Reservation just upriver from Assembly Row - and was struck by the sight of "dozens, if not hundreds, of these large fish. All dead."

He says he reported the fish kill to DCR, adds: "There was also this strange orange boat with wheels churning the water. I wondered if that had anything to do with it." Read more.

If Wynn gets the state's casino license for greater Boston, it says it will pay a local clean-water group to "seed" the Mystic's mouth with up to 250,000 oysters as a natural water-filtration system that could also help re-establish an estuary ecosystem there.

The Massachusetts Oyster Project has been working to bring oysters back to the waters of Boston Harbor because the bivalve's natural feeding habits - basically opening up and letting water flow in - are great at filtering particulates out of the water, some 30 gallons' worth of water a day.

The Coast Guard reports a tanker unloading liquid asphalt at the Exxon terminal in Everett spilled about 11,000 gallons of the stuff into the river around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday after a hose failed.

The liquid asphalt has solidified on the surface of the water. The asphalt is contained around the ship and there have been no known environmental impacts.

The Coast Guard has hired a couple of local hazardous-waste removal companies to clean up the asphalt from the Palanca Singapore.

MIT pickup being pulled out of Mystic River

State Police report that some MIT students were having fun with a 1,000-lb. remote-controlled boat in the Mystic River in Somerville last night. But all good things come to an end and the kids tried using a Ford Ranger to haul the boat out of the water. Instead, State Police say, the boat pulled the pickup into the river. State Police now advise:

If you are trying to pull out a boat from the Mystic River, be sure your truck can handle the pull!

Two Transit Police officers couldn't keep a large man from flinging himself off the Orange Line bridge over the Mystic River early on Nov. 17, but they didn't give up on him - ultimately helping him out of the cold water and into the back of a waiting ambulance.

Officers Eli Bojorquez and Kenneth Phillips will be given formal commendations at a ceremony next Wednesday for saving the man's life after his 30-foot plunge.
