Which is worse: The woman on the ice or the ref just standing there doing nothing?
By adamg on Thu, 06/14/2012 - 7:55am
The crowd at Fight Night at a June 1 teen event in Marlborough was clearly annoyed at the woman who walked onto the rink, but note the super-laid-back ref watching the whole thing and just giving a desultory whistle blow every so often.

shawn thornton.....
never lets his mom attend games.
His mom
Was the one pointing out Shawn to the scouts the night he was "discovered", after he had taken on several guys in a fight, actually :)
funny
i did not know that.
Its
Call Hockey, not Vollyball. Its part of the game if parents dont like it sign your kids up for Soccer.
It gave the local news some
It gave the local news some easy air time to fill that they didn't have to put any reporting into.
Sheesh adam
I'm not a massive hockey fan (although my da and younger brother are), but to my eyes this has got to be one of the least effective/objectionable scrums of hockey players ever.
No one is throwing real punches, no one is using their stick as a weapon (some are even being careful not to drop theirs in order to free up a second hand) - they're all just pushing and hug-tackling each other.
I think the ref we see in most of the frames is making sure that it stays in the blow-off-steam stage, and the mom is in the wrong - she's at risk of accidental injury because of her lack of skates and padding, and her presense, as any son can tell you (or male for that matter - sorry equalitarians) - is as likely to inflame the situation as to muffle it.
Eh
Looked to me one guy was on the ground getting punched in the back of the head.
A fistfight skirmish is one thing, but as soon as one player is unable to protect himself, the fighting is supposed to end or be broken up. On the ground with your back turned, is a point where the ref needs to step in IMO.
Not the worst offense, but the ref half assing it and just standing there isn't exactly controlling his ice.
No one is throwing punches?
The kid is clearly punching away. Granted, the punches shouldn't hurt with gloves and helmets, but come on.
This isn't allowed at the college level, why should it be allowed in bantams?
Thing Is
it should be allowed, when you play a physical game like hockey at a high level of play tempers will flare. Not being able to fight leads people to lay dirty hits on others. Most major injuries in college hockey come from dirty hits not fights. If you are able to fight, naturally you would father punch someone in the face than hit them from behind. Thus leading to fewer major injuries .
I'm callin BS on this one rozy
How about you just don't play dirty and don't hit them from behind? The NBA has an automatic suspension for anyone who leaves the bench area regardless of fights. Guess what? No one leaves the bench because the NBA enforces it.
But I guess you would have to define what you mean by "high level" as well. If you want to have a league with fights, go ahead. Sign a waiver and punch away.
Did you
Really just say don’t play dirty and then reference the NBA? The NBA is full of pussies you flop to the floor when you look at them wrong. Maybe the NFL should switch over to flag football too? If you don’t like it don't watch it, don’t play it and sure as shit don't citizens it. Hockey is a violent sport by nature and if your too much of a pansy to play it Peter than Fu*k off.
Perhaps...
you might want to visit a doctor for signs of traumatic brain injury. That reply looked almost like English.
Sorry, that's a load of
Sorry, that's a load of crap.
Fighting is bad sportsmanship. The point of sports is to get competitive *while following the rules*.
If you need to be allowed to hit people in the face because otherwise you'd be unable to prevent yourself from hitting them somewhere more dangerous, you shouldn't be allowed on the ice in the first place.
No
Fighting can be used as a tool in hockey to motivate your team, also checking is extremely important in body positioning in offence and iatrical in puck position in defense. Don’t comment on a sport you know 0% about.
Refs prove worthless once again.
That mom's kid is never gonna live that moment down, either.
I did get a kick out of the "This is great stuff for YouTube!" comment towards the end of the clip, though.
I actually think it's kind of
I actually think it's kind of great... don't f*ck with that mother's kid! These are teenagers, not adults. If they want to start throwing punches instead of playing hockey, then save it for when they're full grown 'mature' adults or take up boxing as a sport.
