The Boston City Council today officially honored the city's four state-championship teams with proclamations - and pizza: Charlestown High School, whose boys basketball team won the Division 3 state championship, New Mission High School, whose boys basketball team won the Division 5 championship, the Josiah Quincy Upper School's girls wrestling team brought home medals in Division 2 and Boston Latin School, whose hockey team won the Division 2 championship. Boston Women's Sports interviews John and JoJo Boynton, who sold the Boston Pride and two other teams as part of a deal in which two leagues will be merged into one and a bunch of teams will go out of business. Although they're sanguine about a single league, they don't know if Boston will keep its team.
The Massachusetts Appeals Court ruled today that a player on a Pennsylvania teen hockey team owes nothing to a Massachusetts player he accidentally slashed in the wrist with one of his blades while checking him during a 2013 match in Marlboro - because checking's an integral part of the game and accidents happen, even if they sometimes mean the permanent loss of function in one hand. The crowd at Fight Night at a June 1 teen event in Marlborough was clearly annoyed at the woman who walked onto the rink, but note the super-laid-back ref watching the whole thing and just giving a desultory whistle blow every so often.
Temple Street in West Roxbury today once again hosted the annual Shamrock Shootout, which has grown from a small neighborhood block party to an event large enough to feature a sitting US senator dropping the ceremonial first puck (well, yellow plastic ball, actually).

Not that fans of the OTHER local teams would know, but hard working Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas was recently named to the NHL All-Star game. This is a very big deal for a plyer who spent 10 years working through the minors before he made his NHL debut and who still faces serious doubts about his ability to be a number one goalie. Along with Zdeno Chara and Marv Savard, Thomas will represent the Bruins in Atlanta this coming weekend.
