Gas odor forces first-floor evacuation at Federal Reserve

The Boston Fire Department ordered everybody out of the first floor of the Federal Reserve Bank on Atlantic Avenue after workers reported an apparent gas leak in the basement. Readings in the building, however, proved negative and the department now believes the odor originated somewhere else and followed pipes into the building.

It was pretty weird that they didn't evac the entire thing. I work in an SEC satellite in the FED and heard anything about it until everyone was back in and an overexcited intern came up to tell us.

Apropos an earlier posting on floods....... I was sitting in Sorelle's this past weekend (excellent cappuccino) which is across the street from the FRB, watching two huge backup generators being removed from the Fed basement.... probably to have some other backup generators installed on higher ground.
Evacuation
They actually evacuated the basement, sub-basement and eventually the first floor. I was up in the tower and could see the wisdom of not having a lot of people moving toward the gas--they were venting it and searching for the cause. We, of course, discussed the possible scenarios of the effects a basement gas explosion might have on the two "legs" that hold up the tower.
