Top floors of downtown hotel evacuated after bleach spill, chemical reaction
By adamg on Wed, 07/17/2013 - 11:22am
The bleach reacted with some other chemical to create a chemical haze that filled the 13th and 14th floors of the downtown Hilton, 89 Broad St., shortly after 11 a.m. Firefighters evacuated the top five floors of the 15-story hotel while the fumes dissipated.

Workers on the roof had some chemicals/ solvents that had a reaction with the fumes entering the ventilation system.

bleach reacts with mineral oil?
That's...bizarre. Never heard of anything like that. Any chemistry folks out there?

My initial mineral-oil statement was based on listening to the scanner - firefighters at the scene said bleach/mineral oil at least twice. But sounds like it was bleach/something else.
Nope
That's a new one on me. Either there was something in the mineral oil or it wasn't mineral oil that caused the reaction. Lots of times bleach and ammonia reactions happen when cleaning products spill/leak. That releases a nice toxic gas.
13th Floor? - They Should Have Known It's Bad Luck!
Most hotels don't have a 13th floor. It's not surprising such an accident occurred; they should have known it's bad luck!
No 13th Floor of the Pru
But the 14th floor had a really good fire some years back.
