Citizen Complaint of the Day: Comcast should be ashamed of itself
By adamg on Thu, 08/28/2014 - 9:39am
A disgusted citizen reports:
Beacon Hill was littered with these flyers today, both public and private property. Flyers were thrown in vestibules and taped in entryways as well as on light posts. Name of perpetrator is on flyer, please contact and fine.

So many reasons that Comcast *should* be ashamed...
…and, yet, this is the least of them.
generating waste and tossing trash all over Boston
Cutting down trees to create thousands unnecessary flyers with which they litter public and private property IS something to be ashamed of.
Allston Christmas slopover
They're trying to hook the invasion of confused map-clutching, Storrowers we're about to endure. But in true Comcast fashion, they've screwed even this up. There are zero students in the neighborhood that they carpet bombed with these flyers.
plenty of students on Beacon Hill
I lived in Beacon Hill for years and spent many nights kept awake by loud undergrad parties, shouting on the way home from bars, etc. My landlord refused to rent to undergrads but apparently, the landlord next door didn't have any such rules...
Comcast should be destroyed.
As in razed to the ground. As in nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
You don't have the right to make that decision!
You're just a grunt!
.... no offense...
They can BILL me.
They can BILL me.
I had one of these..
Taped to my door, and I called to inquire and they didn't offer that promotion in my area.. Why the *F* are you taping a promotional flyer to my do for a promotion I can't get?
lol
Why the *F* are you taping a promotional flyer to my do for a promotion I can't get?
Because Comcast.
Two points:
1) I wonder if the good people of Beacon Hill would have minded as much if the flyer was printed on parchment and written in quill or old timey typeface.
2) Can we get rid of Comcast and install a municipal broadband network? Despite all its self congratulatory talk about being the "fastest broadband provider", it isn't. Most European networks, where broadband is treated like a utility, run circles around Comcast.
BH?
They fliered the neighborhood least likely to have students moving in on Sept 1??
It's like Groucho Marx said
There's nothing like planning. And THIS is nothing like planning!
I guess you have never heard
I guess you have never heard of Suffolk University then...It is on Beacon Hill as well as on the Downtown Crossing side of the park so there are plenty of students that live all over Beacon Hill
And I guess you've never heard of Louisburg Square
Yep. That old Boston money has resulted in a real student ghetto up there on BH.
Your logical fallacy is... False Generalization
How does "Louisburg Square is a wealthy block." support your argument that Beacon Hill doesn't have many students living on it?
parchment
Yes, all of us on Beacon Hill would truly appreciate if it were on parchment, I said sarcastically. You clearly have zero idea of who lives on the hill.
Anyway, on the north slope there are tons of Suffolk students in apartments and this is targeted at them and the young professionals who are transient. They are the same ones who don't get the part about how leaving trash out too long attracts rats.
And Comcast is a business. We can't get "rid" of Comcast. I'm sure you weren't serious but your remarks just irked me by their idiocy.
Oh, I don't know about that...
We have a pretty good idea of who lives on the hill. Or at least who is the most vocal in municipal affairs lately.
And we can absolutely get rid of Comcast. Or at least their extremely-tenuous status as the sole broadband provider in the city of Boston. If we let FIOS into the city, I'd bet that fully half of Comcast's
hostagescustomers would flee like rats from a sinking ship.Verizon has no desire to be
Verizon has no desire to be in Boston, the cost of laying fiber is astronomical in the city and in many places they'd be competing with both Comast and RCN.

No they want to be in Boston, they just want to provide service in the wealthier areas of town, and ditch the other areas. MeniNO said otherwise.
FIOS is in Boston, just private buildings/complexes, and a SLIVER of Dorchester near Milton. (and I believe bleeding edges of Brighton that share the same network with Watertown)
Hate to keep bothering you
Hate to keep bothering you with sources, do you have any cybah?
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2009/07/boston-a-copper-hole-in-the-f...
"In Boston, Verizon reps have insisted that the issues are all about costs and uptake—how expensive will FiOS be to install, [...] With cable operators rolling out DOCSIS 3.0 across the country, cable can currently meet or exceed FiOS speeds without much difficulty. Boston already has cable service, but what it really wants is competition, with the goal of pushing prices downward."
Bzzzt.
Uh
It's very well known about the battle of Verizon vs Tom Menino. Just about any regular on here can attest to that.
Sorry I have like work to do at my paying job than to sie here and cite sources for folks. This is a internet message board, not a college classroom folks, I'm not writing a thesis.
But since I am on lunch..
here ya go

Thanks for the trip down
Thanks for the trip down memory lane, your sources are all from 2009 except the 2012 one from boston.com that contains nothing relevant to our discussion. Even the older ones which I just wasted my time reading contain zero references to Verizon wanting to fiber Boston.
I do *get* that you and the Boston Herald don't like Tom Menino.
I *said* "Verizon has no desire to be in Boston". It's still true. You *said* "No they want to be in Boston" which is still not true.
Why am I arguing here WTF is *wrong* with me?
So?
You wanted sources. I gave you sources. You wanted sources about my explanation about Tom Menino. You got them.
Sorry Professor if they didn't meat your standards. I guess I failed the class.I didn't know I was going to be graded on this.
Whatever.. my real job that pays me for my time wants me back from lunch. Have a nice day.
Cybah has it right.
I was, while not exactly on the inside, close enough to hear the noise coming from the inside. Verizon seemed to have been interested in bringing FIOS to *some* neighborhoods in Boston (the most profitable ones to wire, I presume); Menino said, in effect, "No cherry-picking; FIOS for the whole city or not at all." Verizon decided not to do FIOS. I'd argue that Menino did a good job representing the interests of the residents of the city.
Second condition
Verizon was even willing to do the whole city like Menino requested...IF the city of Boston would go to bat for Verizon on Beacon Hill in helping get some sort of state-wide cable purveyor license/exception instead of making Verizon go town by town to be allowed to offer cable throughout the whole state.
The city said, you don't understand...this wasn't a negotiation...and all talks broke down and everything stayed status quo.
Parchment?
They would appreciate it if it was made of 1700 kiln fired brick.
#2
Its a hard push for that.. Boston is Union town, and the IBEW, Local 2222 (who has a large union at Verizon) may say other wise.
Funny, I was just reading an article on broadbandreports how several small towns in WMass are just doing that.
Small towns in WMa have a
Small towns in WMa have a different set of problems (which, tbh, are much more significant than the problems of broadband customers in Boston), but they may have a similar solution, i.e., stop waiting around for a carrier to decide that you're worth "serving"). http://wiredwest.net/
Municipal network! Where do I
Municipal network! Where do I sign up?
There's a law against
There's a law against flyering that can (and sometimes does) result in DIY concert promoters and owners of lost pets getting $300 fines per flyer. Normally I'd say that's a violation of the 8th Amendment (excessive fines), but in Comcast's case, I hope they push for it.
in Comcast's case, I hope
Oh yeah, that'll definitely happen.
Just kidding, I'm sure that flyering law will continue to be applied only to indie bands and pet owners.
Behind the times
Was near the NU campus last night and walked by a Comcast table. A table mind you that no one was manning any more, but was left overnight with all their stuff on it to blow away (and get soaked in the rain).
If that wasn't enough - their 'freebie' giveaway was a Comcast mousepad. Who uses a mousepad any more, never mind on a college campus where they pretty much live on laptops...
Not just Beacon Hill
These flyers were on Mission Hill as well. The big mistake they are making is that the new students are not there yet - they are flyering residents who may be moving away this weekend.
Apparently..
My Dad saw a blind woman with a service dog walk past one of Comcast's tables in Allston and the guy at the table tried to sell her an HD Package. Classy.
Uh...
How hard-of-seeing was she?
Is everyone in her house blind?
Even the most basic package of channels (only over-the-air network channels) for Comcast has their HD equivalents included. So, you probably mean that they were offering her cable channel packages, however more and more cable channels are offering Video Description Services for their most popular shows through the SAP audio channel (audio description of what is happening on screen when dialogue alone is not sufficient). And honestly, most TV is such garbage that even if you just listen and don't look at the screen, you're going to grasp 80% of the content.
But don't worry. She may be blind, but she can still see how dumb you are.
Trash
on demand.
Which aptly describes
most of their programming as well. Not to mention the fact that, unless it's still "in season" and one of the six most current episodes, "On Demand" deletes the programming.
The Great Equalizer
Like the swallows of Capistrano, the Comcast canvassers have returned to Allston/Brighton. These flyers as well as well as ones for RCN are everywhere. While they are somewhat annoying I'm glad to see that the bourgeois jerks on Beacon Hill got hit as well. Can't wait to see more moon bats from the Beacon Hill Civic Association up in arms about Comcast destroying the historic integrity of their stupid hill.

You're way too worried about people who don't even know you. Seriously, take a breather!
The printed flyers are
The printed flyers are annoying and as much as I wish they would stop it is better than some of the other tactics they have tried on me. When I was a Comcast subscriber they would call me every day on my cell phone to try to up-sale me to higher TV service. I asked them to stop calling. They insisted that they call otherwise I would not be aware of their latest offers. I told them that all the flyers and mailing they sent me were sufficient and that if they didn't stop calling me I would cancel my service all together. The next week there would be a Comcast rep coming to my door ringing the door bell several days in a row. This was obviously targeted at me since they only rang my doorbell in a multi-unit building and only visited my building on the whole block. Fortunately I live in an area served by Fios so I promptly switched.
HARUMPH!
throw it in the recycle bin or trash.
yes, comcast / xfinity does indeed suck.
More offensive are the flyers
More offensive are the flyers I saw all over Brighton yesterday on the sidewalk and under wipers of cars advertising "free hookups." I thought this was for a guilt free sex app like Tinder but it was actually for HBO Go or something.
I would have been very upset
I would have been very upset if I had gotten all hot & bothered over nothing, too.
