That most Fairmount time of the year

Fairmount Avenue Christmas lights.

Darryl Houston shows us the house on Fairmount Hill in Hyde Park (Summit and Metropolitan, to be exact) whose owner gets a cherry picker every year to string up all those lights all the way up there in those trees.

I never realized there were three separated pieces of Metropolitan spanning Rosi and HP. Was there ever a brdige over the Neponset connecting the two chunks in HP?

I've always wondered when the section between Roslindale and Hyde Park was cut by the rail lines. Haven't those tracks been there forever? Did there used to be a bridge across the tracks?

You might find some clues somewhere in here: www.historicmapworks.com/Browse/United_States/Massachusetts/

Just not for cars. My gut is that when NYNHH wanted to get rid of the grade crossings on the line, they just banned cars.

The crazy part for me is the Neponset River non-crossing. But then again, there was a bridge, according to the 1872 map.

Metropolitan Ave. reminds me of the odd gridded roads where the missus grew up. A road begin, ends, then begins again a mile away with the same name and numbering system.

If by 'forever' you mean since the 1830s, then yeah. There were roads through the district before the railroad came, however.

It was laid out in 1872.

The dates for railroads and regular roads are key when grade separation come into play. Essentially, if a road is laid over a railroad, it is an easement on the railroad, so if the city, county, state, or whoever wants the two to be separate, they have to pay to do it.

Not to get too far from the point, I went to see these lights 2 years ago. Not the fanciest things, but considering how tall the tree is, it is quite impressive.

Looks great! I always appreciate it when a homeowner does a good job with a tree like that. Either get the cherry picker and do it right, or leave it out of the display.
