A halogen lamp set a mattress on fire, sparking a three-alarm this morning at 64 Rutland St., the Boston Fire Department reports.
The department says seven residents of the BHA-owned building were made homeless by the fire, which started in a third-floor bedroom shortly before 7:20 a.m. One firefighter suffered a shoulder injury; another a thumb injury.
The department estimates damage at $300,000.

I have heard no confirmation of the sprinkler status but fire photos suggest it had no sprinklers. Certainly the city should be leading the way in installing sprinklers in all city owned properties to keep residents, firefighter and abutters safe.
