John Costello photographed the Coast Guard patrol outside the Moakley Courthouse today as jury selection begins for the surviving Tsarnaev brother. He faces 30 counts that could mean the death penalty.

The STA at D1 regularly
The STA at D1 regularly patrols the courthouse when a high profile case is going on.
The station...
...is at Base Boston. D1 is the entire New England region down to the northern tip of NJ.
We always referred to the HQ
We always referred to the HQ as D1. When I was stationed at an MSO and we had to head here we'd always say we were going to D1.
Though I know post-ADM Collins a bunch of seemingly unnecessary renaming happened so maybe times have changed.

ISC Boston was briefly BSU (Base Support Unit) Boston, and then not long after simply "Base Boston". MSOs are now part of Sectors, which basically took all the seperate operational commands that used to be under Groups and put them under one CO (usually an O-6). This includes all of the stations as well. I was in during the days of MSOs and ISCs, and I have to admit that working under the sector contruct has been (mostly) a lot better. I was a search and rescue controller at Sector Boston, and it was a lot less of a headache not having to navigate my way through five seperate chains of command.

I was a SAR controller at Group/MSO Woods Hole before moving to Group Boston and it was hell. You'd hear one thing on the radio and don't know if it's your AOR, Boston's AOR, Moriches' AOR, New Haven''s or in some cases Southwest Harbour. At some points in the summer I think I was on the intercom and the DVL more than channel 16.

It has LOBs off of every tower and instant digital recordings as well. The only problem is that everything is so automated, operators rarely make live broadcasts anymore.

...for once. Deepwater is still on going with the launch of new classes of cutters. But it's been a money pit for years.

This is a silly waste of gas and police manpower that serves no function except to give a bunch of boys a chance to play with their toys.
The courthouse has federal security staff. This is the real world, not hollywood. The courthouse is not going to get stormed by wetsuited commandos. Someone approaching from the water also stands out far more than someone driving up or walking down the street, and a high seawall also presents a pretty significant barrier.
We've got plenty of underpatrolled areas that *do* see regular crime, like the SWC, for example. Pull these clowns out of their boat and put them somewhere they'll actually help with crime.

To be fair, it is a training station, but I still find a bit of irony with the location.

Is the walkway closed between this boat and the courthouse?
I think that would be a better place for paparazzi to try that shot, rather than from a boat.
Nothing goes on there
Nothing really goes on in that area behind the courthouse. There's really nothing of interest to see in those glass windows, except maybe a few employees in corridors. Paparazzi would be wasting their time there. Beautiful view looking out from them though.
