John Costello photographed the Coast Guard patrol outside the Moakley Courthouse today as jury selection begins for the surviving Tsarnaev brother. He faces 30 counts that could mean the death penalty.

Excellent!
That should scare away the terrorists!
The STA at D1 regularly
The STA at D1 regularly patrols the courthouse when a high profile case is going on.
The station...
...is at Base Boston. D1 is the entire New England region down to the northern tip of NJ.
We always referred to the HQ
We always referred to the HQ as D1. When I was stationed at an MSO and we had to head here we'd always say we were going to D1.
Though I know post-ADM Collins a bunch of seemingly unnecessary renaming happened so maybe times have changed.
Indeed they have...
ISC Boston was briefly BSU (Base Support Unit) Boston, and then not long after simply "Base Boston". MSOs are now part of Sectors, which basically took all the seperate operational commands that used to be under Groups and put them under one CO (usually an O-6). This includes all of the stations as well. I was in during the days of MSOs and ISCs, and I have to admit that working under the sector contruct has been (mostly) a lot better. I was a search and rescue controller at Sector Boston, and it was a lot less of a headache not having to navigate my way through five seperate chains of command.
I was a SAR controller at
I was a SAR controller at Group/MSO Woods Hole before moving to Group Boston and it was hell. You'd hear one thing on the radio and don't know if it's your AOR, Boston's AOR, Moriches' AOR, New Haven''s or in some cases Southwest Harbour. At some points in the summer I think I was on the intercom and the DVL more than channel 16.
Rescue 21
It has LOBs off of every tower and instant digital recordings as well. The only problem is that everything is so automated, operators rarely make live broadcasts anymore.
Hah, I remember when that was
Hah, I remember when that was all talk for the future, much like project Deepwater. I'm surprised it came to fruition.
R21 was actually money well spent...
...for once. Deepwater is still on going with the launch of new classes of cutters. But it's been a money pit for years.
and your point is what, exactly?
So it's the norm...it's still a stupid norm.
This is a silly waste of gas and police manpower that serves no function except to give a bunch of boys a chance to play with their toys.
The courthouse has federal security staff. This is the real world, not hollywood. The courthouse is not going to get stormed by wetsuited commandos. Someone approaching from the water also stands out far more than someone driving up or walking down the street, and a high seawall also presents a pretty significant barrier.
We've got plenty of underpatrolled areas that *do* see regular crime, like the SWC, for example. Pull these clowns out of their boat and put them somewhere they'll actually help with crime.
Shows how much you know, this
Shows how much you know, this isn't police, it's the military. Federal law enforcement.
Yes
Send the Coast Guard to the Southwest Corridor.
Any other inland places where the Coast Guard should patrol?
I was always interested in a
I was always interested in a PCS to the unit in Keokuk, Iowa (it's on the Mississippi River but c'mon, Coast Guard in IOWA).
Ah, Iowa
I guess that is the spoils of having the caucuses.
I was going to say oversight, but that is straight military- Army Corps of Engineers. And of course, next door in Illinois is a Navy Base.
The Navy base in Illinois...
... is on Lake Michigan, part of our great inland sea system. ;~}
However
On the only of the Great Lakes that is entirely within the United States.
To be fair, it is a training station, but I still find a bit of irony with the location.
Always seemed like a good idea to me....
... but I've taken it for granted for 60+ years (due to my connections with that part of Illinois).
Massively huge lakes
Shared with a foreign country, too!
I wonder if it is partly the rum running and other smuggling history of the Great Lakes that contributes to the unlikely base location?
There were Naval battles on Lake Champlain, after all - why not the much bigger ones? http://www.lcmm.org/shipwrecks_history/history/history_revolution.htm

It's the Coast Guard...
...not the police, genius. And I'm pretty sure you were warm with a hot coffee this morning while these guys were out in the bitter cold, probably before sunrise.
A few years ago, I might have
A few years ago, I might have also thought someone detonating two bombs at the Boston Marathon was something that could happen in movies...
High Sea Wall?
There is a dock and a ramp there.
I'm sure the guy on the bow is having a blast manning a machine gun, on this gusty freezing day.
Hope this anon isn't around when an LNG tanker comes in; he/ she would probably cry.
More about the paparazi
Don't think somebody wouldn't hire a boat to get a shot through those glass windows with a super telephoto lens? Guess again.
Pic?
.
The paparazzi are too busy
The paparazzi are too busy chasing after the Cashgrabians , there seems to be a lot of them in the news. They got a new crop of them coming to market.......
Is the walkway closed between this boat and the courthouse?
I think that would be a better place for paparazzi to try that shot, rather than from a boat.
Nothing goes on there
Nothing really goes on in that area behind the courthouse. There's really nothing of interest to see in those glass windows, except maybe a few employees in corridors. Paparazzi would be wasting their time there. Beautiful view looking out from them though.
