Massive brawl shuts Revere Beach

Brawl on Revere Beach

Stanley Staco reports a bench-clearing, bottle-throwing brawl involving up to 200 people at the Revere Beach bandstand brought police from Revere, Lynn, Chelsea and Boston racing in to break things up, along with Transit and State Police.

NECN reports the brawl started when two women got into a fight, their boyfriends joined in and then pretty much everybody around them decided, what the hell, why not, and started throwing punches and tossing bottles.

Cutting school and invading Revere.

Again--jousting at KKK-shaped straw men. No one is going to even begin to claim that "Boston school kids" are causing trouble in Revere. Revere and the surrounding towns have their own problems with troublemakers from all sorts of ethnic backgrounds who will surely do their own "well, he started it!" blame game. They don't need to go pointing fingers elsewhere.

And refers to past incidents at Revere Beach in which Boston students were blamed for causing all kinds of trouble.

I may be reading too much given the context of another very unpleasant thread. I don't remember ever hearing that.

A quick google of news "revere beach student riot"

From 2009, an exceptionally calm and neutral WBUR story about a day when thousands of teens from all over the area crowded to Revere Beach. Although it turned out there were no significant violent events, much of the press breathlessly reported 'riots' among 'thousands of teens'. Lots of public garumphery from all quarters.

Like this Herald story on subsequent calls from a Revere pol to put metal detectors at the beach's T stop to catch the 'riffraff'. Many other commentors pointed at Boston teens specifically even though it appears that little/no evidence of a particular Boston presense was ever produced.

From a couple years later - a 2011 UHub story on massive State police presence at mere rumor of student skip day invasion of Revere Beach.

And again - the following year, a WCVB story on state police massing for "Hordes Of Students".

Adam's take on things shortly after that embarrassing overreaction.

These are from like 2011! I can't read everything. :) And Revere Beach isn't really on my radar much. The general drift still seems to be people concerned about huge groups of kids making trouble--both local kids and potentially kids from Boston. No doubt there's some racial fearmongering going on but its not like some rumor that 400 kids from the Burke are invading Wellesley--this is a real thing that communities and cops have to deal with. Summer's here, the testosterone is flowing...

Duly noted. I wouldn't have known that from the comment you overreacted to.

Maybe you only see black kids and assume "BPS" means "black" because you are so afraid of them? You should talk to a professional about that.

up
Voting closed 0

and read and comprehend before you post. I'll try to explain it slowly. Yes-- "Boston high school kids" is very likely code for "black teenagers." It sounds as if there was definitely some of this "outsiders coming in and starting trouble"/ scary "Boston" i.e. black kids coming out to the burbs thing going on--that's what I meant when I wrote "fearmongering." though as I pointed out, Revere is not Wellesley. Get it? How you twist this to infer that I personally am afraid of black people is beyond me. And btw, yes--the BPS is by far majority black and Hispanic, especially when you factor out the exam schools which skew heavily white and Asian.

Honestly--the light-speed leaping to accuse posters of being secret racists is becoming epidemic here. And I know that Adam does have to flag a lot of serious racist crap but the constant nasty, baseless finger pointing is frankly creepy and kind of witch-hunty.

up
Voting closed 0

You've made no secret of your racism. Anyone who reads about an incident and, absent ANY evidence either way, asserts loudly and repeatedly that it must be black kids is not being the least bit secretive.

Don't YOU assume the kids were black? Would I be out of line if I said that I will give you a million dollars if they are NOT black?

Not sure how you could get any more overt.

Except for this: Go f*** yourself. Since we've both been posting on here for a long time, often on the same side of an argument, I expected more than this BS from you and especially over a stupid thread about teenagers stealing booze.

Yeah--I'm a big, fat racist because I assume that a bunch of middle-schoolers busted on the 66 en route to Dudley are black. The same way I assume that if there's a post about drunken a**holes acting up on the train to Braintree that they're not. Brawlers in Revere? I have no idea--not an area I know well. Unlike you with your disingenuous scrabbling around "oh maybe they were Russian!!" crap, I actually live in the city, not in a virtually all-white suburb. I have a lot of black neighbors and friends. I'm actually pretty comfortable being the only white person on the bus. And I don't sit in my all-white workplace or lily-white Medford and call people racists because they make a common-sense observation. Honestly? "Overt racist?" Maybe by your definition. But yours is the kind of shifty, dishonest racism that makes a lot of black people distrust so-called liberals. You'll spend all day preaching and name-calling on the Internet but send your kids to a school with some kids with a little extra melatonin? Not a chance in hell.

Adam--apologies in advance. Feel free to delete. I may need to just step away for a while.

I'm not going to wade into most of this argument, except to point out that Medford has had an African-American community for centuries. Visit West Medford Open Studios this weekend if you don't believe me.

Good thing you called them hooligans - thugs is now banned on this site to refer to ruffians, hoodlums and other no-good-nicks.

For the record, mr moderator, I have no idea what race(s) were present, although I would venture to guess that just about every race was involved in a 200 person brawl on revere beach. I'd also say this is thug-like behavior.

What is happening at Revere Beach , the State gets millions of dollars to reconstruct its sidewalks wall repair new sand new condo construction new everything at Revere beach. Now people from the area have to put up with this .
I guess the demographics have changed. 30 years ago there were muscle heads with names like Vinny, Guido, Joey hanging on the wall at Revere beach with their Pontiac Trans Am's parked on the boulavard. Revere has cheaper rents than parts of Boston, this attracts the mischievous person. How to prevent brawls from happening on Revere beach, solution: Revere should charge a $10 fee to enter Revere beach, also a Revere residential sticker should be required to park close to the beach, it keeps away unwanted visitors.

1. Lovely Stereotyping. How is that Jersey Shore Complete Series DVD collection going for you?

2. Revere Beach is State Property. Which means it is my beach even if I live in Greenfield I can go on it. You cannot be charged a fee to enter. This isn't Singing Beach in Moneychester-By-The-Sea. The roads along the beach are state property as well, not owned by the corruption magnet known as the City of Revere. The State Police has primary jurisdiction over the beach, not RPD.

3. Thanks for your opinion. Please come back with facts next time.

Well, Mr Charlie Baker should change the law fast, or the law should be changed seasonal during summer months.
Because this will happen again and again until a cop gets hurt or even killed by these animals.
Baker has the power to keep the public and this crowded public beach as safe as possible, he should use creative ways to keep street fighting gangs off this beach, one way is to charge a $10 fee to thwart off the Animals, money will go towards local community youth violence programs. I think this story made national news by the way, huffington post.
Vacationers from around the country and World visiting Boston will avoid Revere beach, and that can hurt the local economy.
Any news on the condition of a 23 year old exchange student attacked by Animals on the common, hit on the side of his head by a punch.

... could make such a ridiculous suggestion.

Revere Beach is several miles of sandy strip sandwiched between a public street and the ocean.

There are no gates. There is no fence. There's a wall in places, but it's there to keep the tide in, not the people out.

Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea has only one way in and out, so it's feasible to charge admission there.

Have u looked at the sneakers, clothes and cell phones these kids own? They throw 10 dollars Around as if it is pennies. The truth in the matte is, alcohol, fake tough guys and gals will appear anywhere and everywhere, let's just hope that the police department can handle these situations along with the community residents

I totally agree. And I think this principle should be extended to other state roads, which would mean the removal of the resident permit restrictions on Park Drive, etc in Boston.

And even though the town owns the parking lot at Singing Beach, that one's particularly insidious. You're only allowed to drive there if you live within walking or biking distance.

It's their beach and their parking lot paid for by their taxes. That's like requiring that you be able to use their school system.

Don't just pick on Manchester. Every coastal town has the same scenario. Towns with lakes have the same thing. Residents only.

It's parking at Singing Beach that is resident only. I sometimes go there via commuter rail (used to do it a lot more before the fares got so expensive). The walk is only about 15 minutes and is quite a lovely part of the experience. Probably the loveliest beach that is easily accessible for the carless amongst us.

1) Isolation within densely populated communities and neighborhoods. Familiarity breeds contempt.

2) A lack of education. Hell, not even that: A lack of a desire to learn anything.

3) Possible un(der)employment.

4) Few or no hobbies, perhaps because of a lack of disposable income with which to pursue them.

5) The inability to reason that most grievances are not grounds to initiate a fistfight (or worse) with a foe.

I know I'm making a bit of an assumption here, but I'm going to guess that at least one of the primary causes was, just maybe, alcohol.

It's going out on a limb, of course. I'm sure the crowd at Revere Beach would never over-consume on a hot day; they would realize the dangers inherent in dehydration and possible heat stroke.

The East Boston Station became useless about the time it opened in 1919. Unfortunately, with the laws restricting immigration in 1923, immigrants only trickled in afterwards. It really doesn't compare to Ellis Island or Angel Island except for purpose.

Before 1919, immigrants and nonimmigrants would go ashore in the same place, which was wherever the docks were for the line. The immigrants were examined while on the ships before docking, just like the cargo being transported.

Little known fact. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts began examining immigrants decades before the Federal Government did. Xenophobia was strong in these parts.

You can find records like this one (from 114 years ago today) for just about any date you care to search for in the late 19th and early 20th century. Seems like immigrants were coming ashore at pretty much any berth a ship tied up at, and they were processed by the Commissioner of Immigration.

One of the buildings on the waterfront (roughly between the courthouse and the Fish Pier, damned if I can come up with the name) was a major processing/ entry point, I think mainly in the late 19th into the 20th century.

The latest in Code Words to describe teenagers from Boston by state police spokesman

up
Voting closed 0

I have a question about the aftermath of this. Once multiple agencies corral several hundred rowdy teens into the T, do they brush themselves off and congratulate each other? Or do they go down the line helping the Transit police with their newfound mess?

up
Voting closed 0

...maybe you can ask security at Fenway Park, or any bar anywhere. They dust their hands and say "not my problem" once they've moved the rowdies out of their premises, why should "multiple agencies" deal with it any differently? What would you propose they do, exactly?
