We need your help! These two sweet girls were abandoned tied to a tree at the Arnold Arboretum on Saturday (9/17/16). If you recognize these dogs or saw anything, please let us know. 617 635 5348.
Sometimes these things are done for revenge or to get rid of an unwanted burden (such as when an elder goes to the hospital and their children are awful).
Wow. Then bring them to a shelter. Don't tie them to a tree in the Arboretum and just assume that that the right person or rescue team will save them. Thank goodness they were saved by the right samaritan(s).
some people might think that they're going to get in trouble or have to pay something if they take them to a shelter. Not saying it's right at all--the thought of these poor girls looking after their owner as he/she walked away is killing me--but at least they assumed that someone would find them. It seems as if people do worse things--tossing dogs out of moving cars, etc. all the time. Awful, all of it, but I'm relieved these doggies are safe and will find good homes.
Hard to know why someone would do something like this, but they may not have realized that there were alternatives. Far worse to find a dog that's been turned out into the middle of nowhere and left. That's just evil - this looks more desperate.
Sorry swrrly, but there is NO EXCUSE for abandoning and abusing your pets. If you can't take care of your pets then you need to bring them to the nearest animal shelter. Please educate yourself on this matter before excusing animal abuse.
that anyone would do this rather than giving them up at a shelter.
Neighbors found a dog years ago tied to a bench in the Arboretum. She had almost chewed through her leash. They took her, spent weeks trying to find the owner with no luck and kept her. I'm sure Benchy had a better life with them than she would ever have had otherwise. I wish the same for these two pups.
If those dogs were regularly walked there, people will know them and the owner. Dog walking results in a community of familiar dogs and owners. I bet there are people who could recognize those dogs and tell you their names. Hopefully they get the message.
All that pit bull mythology is just bullshit anyway.
All dogs should be temperament tested before being around kids ... Even labradors can be "murder dogs". The only dog that ever attacked my kid was a mentally ill King Charles spaniel belonging to my idiot SIL. The dog ran from one room to another to attack (and my MIL immediately banished it from her home forever).
So all stupid dumbass spaniels should be shot using your logic?
I've been chased down the street by a pit and only escaped by leaping into the bed of a pickup truck. Like a dog Terminator.
Relentless in its pursuit and desire to attack. I know a spaniel wouldn't do this. Nor a setter, which are known to bite. This was pure aggression which was bred into this animal.
I also had a pit walking by me and I glanced down to evaluate it. It sensed that and lunged at me and bit, ripping my long sleeve shirt to shreds and missing my arm only by happenstance.
Pits can be dangerous, don't kid yourself.
Now, that said, nothing points to these gals being dangerous. Look like some good girls.
But there's a reason gangsters have pits and it ain't mythology.
In my day, the gang bangers had German Shepherds, then Dobermans, then Rottweilers ...
But my brother's dog was mauled by a Great Dane, and I have had to bear spray a mutt that attacked me on a bike ride (dog had a history but owner wouldn't restrain) and my husband was bitten by a weimaraner on a zip leash who "didn't like joggers" on a jogging path. A friend's roommate had her psychotic puppy mill German Shepard taken away for attacking people, too. One neighbor got so fed up with the Jack Russell Terriorist down the street running off leash and nipping at his kids that he called the dog officer.
The problem isn't a single breed. The problem is the environment in which they are bred and reared and kept.
Show me DNA studies that these dogs are anything but dogs and I might, well, bite. Otherwise? "Just So" stories about fictitious breed traits, and attribution of behavior to breed genetics rather than to specific treatment and rearing and training.
In the meantime, the pitt next door has friended my cat. I don't worry because Mr. Pibble has a 2 year old and baby in the house, is kept leashed outside, and is the best behaved dog on the block - even when the Jack Russell Terriorist ran at him off leash.
theres more than one type of jerk and there are multiple breeds of murderous canines, too.
the fact that youre insufferable to many different breeds doesnt mean that pit bulls arent effectively a loaded gun in the hands of a two year old.
i wonder what sort of dangerous dog breeds you keep, swirl. hopefully whoever they attack doesnt get severely maimed before somebody takes them away for the dangerous beasts they are.
My neighbor has two pitts (and a old brown lab). They are some of the friendliest dogs. They love being manhandled and will lick your face. Yeah one has issues (mostly likes to bark and howl when she's not around) but generally they are good dogs.
Our third floor neighbor had one.. since it was a rescue and a former fighter, it was always on the attack. Alone the dog was great, but one day it attacked one of the other neighbors pitts because it was trained to do so. (and she gave it away shortly after because she felt so bad)
With any dog, it's all about their temperament and their up bringing as a puppy. If they are trained to fight, they always have that instinct. It really isn't breed specific. Pitts just tend to be singled out for fighting because they are easily trainable (they are really smart dogs tbh), and if are trained well, can pack alot of power since they are so compact and muscular vs other breeds.
Here's a thought for you -- and I really hope you will consider this. Whatever perverse gratification you get from posting deliberately antisocial, shit-stirring, provocative content, you would have a happier life if you weren't constantly trying to goad people into relating to you as an asshole, and then relishing your sense of vindication when they do exactly that. Whatever you think is wrong with you that will make people hate you, the truth is that there are people who will accept you, warts and all, if you give them a chance. But a first step is to be honest with yourself about your "warts". Some of them probably exist only in your imagination. Others are real, and you gotta own 'em -- not necessarily fix 'em (because not everything is fixable), but learn to live with them. And then, learn to live with everybody else's.
Dominican guy in his 20s, lives on or near South St by Alfa. Pretty sure it's his dogs. Don't know anything else about besides he let them crap on the sidewalk.
Before we judge, have we thought that perhaps it was a great dog owner that was sick of having two obviously violent breeds possibly killing him/her and their family in their sleep?
I try to avoid this topic because it's so polarizing AND because I think the truth lies somewhere in between "it's all how you raise them" and "murder dogs." But sheesh. A couple of pit mix ladies are about as likely to murder you (in your sleep or otherwise) as...let's just say you probably have a better chance of fatally injuring yourself on a stepladder or drowning in a bucket of water.
The body language I see in this one snapshot into the two pups' lives is that with the ears down and back, it's really rather submissive. I would take my time further getting to know them, but this one photo tells me they just want some human/pack attention and love.
Sad, but this type of thing goes on all the time. People dump animals and rationalize their behavior. "Fluffy will be all right, he'll find a new home" "He will be fine out here in the country/woods/farm area all by himself". Unfortunately, this is not always the case.
They convince themselves that all shelters are bad, plus they don't want to make a donation.

I remember getting down on the floor to pet the "nice doggie" and tell it that everything would be ok. My mom noticed a bit too late and warned me to get away, because a dog that is hurt might snap or bite.
He didn't. He wagged his tail and licked me. Not one bit of aggression as his owner and I petted and comforted him. I know now I was far too close to the dogs mouth, and might have been in very bad shape if something went wrong, but this dog was far too gentle for that.
It's not in the genes....or at least it wasn't back then. It's only with the constant inbreeding that puppy mills and dog fighters have been using that many dogs (not just pit bulls) have become aggressive, combined with a lack of training from owners who are ignorant of how to care for a dog or are just plain irresponsible.

But hey in this day and age who needs facts when you can fear monger and pile up the lies?

Goddammit.

This makes me really mad/sad
Humanity is the devil.
Those poor puppies.
I hope they find homes where they are loved.
They may have had a loving home

Yes! There is no excuse for abusing and abandoning your dog... I don't care what the revenge is that swrrls was talking about.
No excuse made
For abusers or for your apparent inability to understand what you read.
Explanations are not excuses, dear. Perhaps you failed science, too?

Excusing?
She was explaining how these things might happen.
I guess you failed that reading comprehension stuff on the MCAS.
Sigh
Another confused person who can't separate explaination from endorsement.

That is the cutest thing ever. Lucky girl!
The locals will know

good choice, dog owner
get rid of your murder dogs before they kill a baby or elderly person that accidentally looked at them the wrong way
WTF
Superstitious git.
These are DOGS. They look like mutts to me.

yes
except i think the myth is that they're good dogs that don't murder babies, just ask any owner of these quadrupedal murder machines
edit: idk swirl, maybe i'd start with your SIL first and start at the source rather than the symptom
My neighbors have no problems
Save the superstitious just so stories for church.
Cool story, bro!
Keep the in-law stories coming! They're the best.
Oh and anecdotally:
I've been chased down the street by a pit and only escaped by leaping into the bed of a pickup truck. Like a dog Terminator.

yeah, times change
nobody is getting into fights with greasers on vacant lots anymore either.
remember grandma, skins only, no heaters.
Point well missed
It ain't the dog du jour - its the jerks.
People used to tell the exact same stories about being chased by "tenacious" and "locking jawed" Rottweilers and Dobermans.
Too bad for you that I'm old enough to have heard this shit before.
point well missed indeed
theres more than one type of jerk and there are multiple breeds of murderous canines, too.

well
Have you thought that perhaps the reason they attacked you is because they could smell the asshole on you?
First one was attacking anyone it saw
So I'm going to go with no. It was running amok on the street like a bull in Pamplona.
2nd one had plenty of time to smell me and only attacked when I made eye contact.
Never had a prob with any other dog ever. And have owned them.
Thanks for asking though.
It's the eyebrows
So evil
View it on moble
you don't see the brows

That's at least the second time you have posted a hateful blog about dogs, pitbulls in particular. I would hate to see you have any animal at all.
Maybe I'm missing something,

The biggest wimp on the block
When I was a child in the 1970's, there was a lady with a pit bull living across the street. It was the biggest wimp on the block. I first met this dog when a German Shepherd that was running loose attacked and mauled the poor pit bull, and nearly mauled our neighbor (the pit was on a fairly short leash).
