What archaeologists are finding at the site of that South Boston Waterfront shipwreck

Boston City Archaeologist Joe Bagley is posting photos of the 19th-century stuff he and other folks are finding today at the site of the shipwreck uncovered during construction of a new building on Seaport Boulevard.

Just going thru those photos (thanks for posting the link by the way--very cool stuff), but is most of what they're finding 18th or 19th century artifacts?

My eyes saw "19th," but my fingers typed "18th." I'll blame the heat.

I read one article that said "mid-1800s".

I have to wonder if this boat was damaged in the Great Fire and was scuttled, then filled-over shortly thereafter?

I went down the Google rabbit hole last night, wondering how common it was for lime bearing ships to catch fire and be scuttled.

Google handed me this short story called The Derelict "Neptune".

It is from 1900, and is chemistry-geek satisfying and an interesting yarn overall.

Between this story and the boiler explosions article, I probably would have enjoyed this magazine.
