Donald Trump not welcome in Roslindale restaurant

Charlie Redd, owner of Redd's in Rozzie on Washington Street, posts a call to arms against the gathering darkness:

The resistance begins now. Trump is an obvious danger to the rights I believe in and that this business is built around. Why fight? Because we are fucking Americans. That’s what we do, fight. Fight for values we hold dear. Just because I lie on the liberal view of the issues doesn’t mean I don’t have the will to fight. Just because we live in Massachusetts and are protected from the madness that will be unleashed on our other states does that give us a reason not to speak up and act? I will fight for the other states and in this state. I will fight for the ones that can’t. Right now that’s my daughters and all the girls growing up today in this confusing time where the end of male dominance in the Oval Office was ripped from their dreams and a whole other peril to their rights entered it. Olive and Viola cannot fight. But I can. Cecilia, who I tutor in the 2nd grade, cannot fight. Her family is laying low as their future as immigrant Americans lies in jeopardy. I can fight for them. I can stand up when they cannot.

Did you read the part about his visit down South (of which he's a native)?

Too bad dmcboston tried to hijack the thread with Ben McDonald's citation of Laci Green tweets, which have almost nothing to do with Charlie Redd.

dmcboston seems to be making the argument that "many of them" -- people who disapprove of Trump -- sound like nutbags. It's such a clever and thoughtful critique. People who disapprove of Trump are nutbags.

In Mass., there were two non Trump voters for every Trump voter. I don't think Trump is going to win any popularity contests in this state. That said, let's talk about Charlie Redd's post.

up
Voting closed 0

And a good morning to you, too.
Hijack? The only difference between Laci's insane rant and Redd's insane rant is, um, not much.

Substitute "Obama" for "Trump", set the clock back a bit and this thread would be Godwinned in about nine seconds.

After reading the introduction to Redd's rant, I decided that there was no way in hell I was going to give him a page hit. It's an obscenity laced pile of borderline insane invective.
"Cecilia, who I tutor in the 2nd grade, cannot fight. Her family is laying low as their future as immigrant Americans lies in jeopardy."

Nonsense. Unless her parents are gangbangers or felonious in other ways, there's not much chance of them going anywhere.

Trump didn't carry Massachusetts. Oh, well, there are other states. Many other states.
It's not that people who disapprove of Trump are nutbags. It's that people that go on rants about "The resistance begins now. " don't sound too level headed. No, I won't 'read the whole thing'.

I am from the south and was also home for Christmas. I saw one confederate flag in the two weeks I was there and it was at a trailer in the middle of the woods along the French Broad River. It is a stereotype that the south is full of confederate flag flying racists and is not true. Stop being prejudice Adam. And don't believe everything you hear/read. Thanks.

My wife and I spent one July 4th in eastern Tennessee (Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area). I would not recommend the experience for anybody who is glad the North won the Civil War.

We're two Bostonians surrounded by drunk people in pickups flying large Confederate flags as they drive down their equivalent of Rte. 1. Of course we were polite - and then we enjoyed one of the best fireworks shows ever because apparently down South they like seeing the rocket's red glare a lot more up close than fire marshals up here would allow.

But fuck this "culture" crap. Grits and the accent and hospitality are culture. The stars and bars is not culture: It's treason. And failure. And death.

I had a similar not-recommended experience near Leesburg, VA about 8 years ago. Once someone heard me talk (I suppose I have something of a hybrid northeastern USA accent), a previously pleasant interaction turned to me being given the silent treatment.

A similar thing happened in, of all places, Switzerland, when I pulled a girl back into our whitewater raft after she had been ejected. It was all, "thanks! thanks!" until I told her I was from Massachusetts. She and her friends were from Georgia (state, not Republic). I couldn't believe it.

Seriously, you've just forgotten the last eight years and the refusal to accept the fact the president was not a Kenyan-born Muslim out to confiscate your guns and bury opponents under Texas Walmarts? It was kind of a big deal, it was in all the papers, and if you can't remember something like that, might I suggest an appointment with a neurologist?

In the meantime, though, you might want to Google "First Amendment" and read it. It's really short, won't take you more than a minute to go through it all, even if you have to sound out each word. It ensures one of our fundamental rights: To speak out and to protest. Over the past eight years, conservatives made ample use of that amendment. Are you suggesting the other side not be allowed to do so?

Well, no. Most of Adam's description only applies to the cartoon characters that live in the vitriol of the left. Hell, I let my Aryan Nation card expire. (Just kidding, AN. I would never pretend to belong to you. I'm too afraid of you.)

Am I asking way too much to give it time to see how this thing plays out?

Oh, the First Amendment is one of the greatest sentences ever written. One line and it enshrines freedom of speech, assembly and religion.

up
Voting closed 0

"Am I asking way too much to give it time to see how this thing plays out?"

Yes, you are. I think the President elect has already showed how it's going to play out. His inadequate and unqualified picks for his cabinet/administration has shown what he is going to do to this country (and don't dismiss his white supremacist friends that he has decided to also include in his administration).

I know it's easier to white wash things to make yourselves feel better rather than admit that maybe the revolution you so wanted is actually going to screw so many already marginalized people never mind our standing in the world. But hey, as long as you're not the one suffering – right? Being a racist is ok! Being a sexual assaulter is OK! Denigrating women, minorities, immigrants - hey, it's all ok!!!

YOU may not be a racist, misogynistic, xenophobe but If you voted for him you did in fact vote for racism, misogyny and xenophobia. Your vote basically said " I am ok with all of the above behavior as long as I don't feel marginalized - it's ok for other people to be marginalized - just not me. Oh and coal."

I find it funny how many Trump voters are talking about "let's see what happens, "give the guy a chance", "let's work together" when for the last 8 years the right blocked everything they could and made no qualms about saying they would do just that the day Obama got into office. And they did in grand style. And then everyone blames the liberals and the President for their perceived slights but not the actual people doing the blocking; the Republicans - it's never, ever the Republicans. It's always someone else. Of course one of their best is blocking the Supreme court pick of the current president but I guess you are ok with that too. But I am sure if the Dems do it against Trump's picks they will be called un-American and what a travesty it will be.

So yes, I am sorry - at this point you are asking too much. People's lives and rights are literally on the line. Maybe it doesn't affect you. Maybe you are male…maybe you are a white male. Maybe you're not. Maybe you were just uniformed. Maybe you were informed and wanted to throw a grenade into the political landscape no matter the consequences to women and minorities. Maybe you voted against your own interests b/c you didn't care that he had no plan and is unqualified. Maybe you don't care that this guy just spouts bullshit, isn't a fan of facts and data and is more concerned with Alec Baldwin's portrayal of him rather than real issues.

All I know is that the right seems to have a really, really short memory.

Trump's cabinet picks are completely horrible.

Lets start with Rick Perry for Energy Secretary. This is the same Rick Perry who wants to get rid of the Department of Energy, only he is so god damn dumb that he couldn't think of the name of it during the debate. Rick Perry, who got Cs and Ds in college, will be succeeding a Nobel Prize winner that Obama appointed.

Trump's pick for secretary of education never attended a public school, never sent a kid to a public school and never worked at a public school. She is a religious nut who wants to destroy public schools so that tax money can instead be sent to crazy christian schools. Her brother ran a company that murdered people for money(Blackwater) and her husband runs a pyramid scheme(Amway). They are a horrible family is what I am pointing out.

His pick of secretary of state is the head of ExxonMobil. Enough said. His pick for HUD is a surgeon with no experience in that field who himself admitted he will be a "fish out of water".

LOL...so why is everyone so looking forward to General Mattis's appointment? Well, it's obvious. His nickname is 'Mad Dog'. The Marines call him 'Mad Dog'.
So, he's got that going for him.
The Congress, in what will be called by the talking heads,"the total destruction of the Republic, Constitution, America, our way of life, oh, and racism" will pass a law, probably of three sentences or less, qualifying General Mattis for the post. Easy peasey.

From the web site you cited, "Having retired in 2013, Mattis needs a special waiver to serve, as U.S. law bans uniformed military officers from being secretary of defense for seven years after leaving active duty. Barno, now based at American University, echoed Dunlap's view that more retired generals don't necessarily equate to more foreign military interventions. "The military leaders that [Trump] has selected will bring a very sober voice about the risks of using military power," he said. "So I think the military people will bring a cautionary note to a number of these campaigns, in some cases more than some civilian leaders might in the past."

Obama did effectively nothing to halt the financial crisis and Bush had little if anything to do with it. Both the crisis and the salvation from it were effectively orchestrated mostly by the Federal Reserve with a hefty dose of help from both sides of the aisle in Congress due to their cozy telationship with Fannie Mae.

Janet Yellen began her term as Fed chairperson in 2014, so trying to blame her for the 2007 financial collapse makes you about as intelligent as republicans that blame Obama for the Katrina response.

Amazing how literally every single republican has selective amnesia from 2001 to 2009.

up
Voting closed 0

Read what I wrote:

"crisis and the salvation from it were effectively orchestrated mostly by the Federal Reserve"

The Fed was in charge of regulating the banks - and dropped the ball when numerous talking heads were screaming about what was going on with derivatives to anyone that would listen (though many others played a part in the collapse - perhaps in part even Bush - though his role was small and mainly in the form of cheerleading impossible growth in home ownership).

Washington (both the White House and Congress - has done effectively nothing to revive the economy - it did that on its own with A LOT of help from Ben and later Janet (to their credit - some of their early moves were brilliant - more recently QE and near zero interest rates not so much).

My concern now are the dislocations from easy money/leverage for the rich - which has exploded the stock market, luxury real estate and cheap debt for wealthy corporations using it to financially engineer their stock prices. God (and not Janet Yellen) only knows if the Fed can engineer a soft landing/withdrawal of what may be ludicrous policies.

And if you must know my voting record at least in presidential elections since 2000 - try determining my allegiance from this in the last 5 presidential elections: R-D-R-D-I

"Barack Obama was born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii." -- Literary sell-sheet produced by Obama and his publicist, 1991

Fascinating to see the far-left continue to blame conservatives for the "born in Kenya" controversy when Obama first put it out there himself. Or if you believe his publicist, some youngster at the agency decided to make it up but was powerful enough to get it in print from 1991-2007. This is akin to blaming the victim. Obama or his publicist lied, people took them at their word and now are blamed for believing what was written. Even far-left Snopes confirms the story. Stop blaming conservatives.

Hell, that Congresswoman in Arizona got shot and it was blamed on Sarah Palin's graphic (in the technical sense of the word) targeting of Democrats. Printed on a map.

Your post about the U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords shooting reminded me of fake-news coverage of the Marathon Bombings. Giffords attacker was a drug addict, described by some friends as liberal, and registered independent. Nothing to do with Republicans, despite the hype. On the day of the Marathon Bombings, I recall some of the Boston TV anchors saying because it was April 15 (Tax Day) the suspect could be a conservative or Tea Party member upset about paying taxes. The gravity of that day made it impossible to laugh but it goes to show what you're dealing with.

Based on his rant, I doubt he owns much but it will be fun to sue and call Maura Healey's Trump hate hot-line (very slow there lately), the Licensing Board and ABCC when denied service. Maybe I'll bring my service dog with $9 vest for good measure, she can lick the plate. Perhaps the ACLU and the dying Boston Globe will back me.

Kind of like the unhinged trashing of President-elect Trump wears thin? I might talk about domestic abuse forms once or twice a year, I didn't realize it bothered you. I filed many 51A's and protected dozens of children over the years but I'm no longer a mandated reporter. Still, you're right. Morally, a phone call might be in order based on the extreme language and tone of this man.

I'll never forget the night I was given the honor of being appointed guardian ad-litem for a family of small orphaned kids on a night when former Superior Court Judge Maria Lopez had the overnight judicial response phone. Judges would take turns on-call, issuing restraining orders and warrants when court was closed. Although far-left, (she was a Dukakis appointee and husband owned the Boston Phoenix) I found Judge Lopez to be very professional and genuinely caring about the kids and the police. McDonald's fed them Happy Meals and provided toys until DSS (now DCF) could place them in a foster home. One of the better memories.

so miserably? Do you think it was because most who voted for Trump or didn't vote at all love the Republican party anymore than they love the Democratic party? For myself, when I see a party and more specifically an ideology (self described 'progressive') whose only hope of winning in many cases, especially at the federal level, is through having a large enough population of needy, desperate people, I have a problem with that. And I do hold some 'progressive' views, I'm not a raging 'fascist'.

The lunatic fringe left has damaged the Democratic brand, just as, imo, the lunatic right have damaged the Republican, Maybe we need a third, or forth, way.

And yes, Mr. Redd needs to calm his tits. Mr. Trump spent most of his adult life championing liberal (sorry, progressive) causes, and financially supporting them.

I guess it's time for the obligatory reminder that, in fact, Clinton won the popular vote by 2.9 million votes or so. Where she blew it was in not paying enough attention to Electoral College math, in states such as Michigan, which she could have won. In any other democratic country in the world, she'd be president-elect now. That's a flaw in her campaign, but even despite that, a majority of people who voted voted against the Republican candidate.

As for Trump spending most of his adult life championing liberal causes, I suppose that would be true if liberalism included outright racism and misogyny, which, at least in the reality-based world, it doesn't.

I voted for Hillary, but I was not a huge fan. Lots of people who voted for her (maybe even the majority of people) didn't really like her that much. Even though I like most of her stands on the issues, she was still the lesser of two evils. She didn't lose because she "forgot about the blue collar worker", she lost because she wasn't very likeable while Trump was, to a lot of people, strong and saying what they wanted to hear.

up

I did not vote for Hillary or Trump since I disliked them both. So, yes, there is truth in what you say. However, much has already been written about how she choose not to connect with the middle class who are having a real difficult time living in this country (for a good many many years) and, in which, has been basically ignored by the democratic party. (Personally, she always came across to me as a phony who could give a rat's ass for those not in her class.) Trump played those poor people who voted for him to a T and won; she and her party ignored them and lost. (Never mind about half of the country did not bother even to show up and vote. That, in itself, should tell us something).

And in regards to the popular vote, her job was to convince enough voters to vote for her by our current electoral process. Period. Jumping up and down after the fact makes one look like a sore loser. She and the democratic party failed. And it appears to me that that party may be too far gone to understand why they failed.

Yes, Trump is a narcissist demagogue and his election has allowed some of the country's anger to manifest itself as we see it now. But again, the democrats should of and could of stopped him by running a more viable candidate.

Sour grapes? Is that what you call it when someone decides not to show up to be abused? Because you know that even if Trump shows an unprecedented* level of restraint and refrains from taunting her, his brownshirts will have a fucking field day letting their sexism and misogyny and insane irrational "lock her up" hatred hang out. It will be a completely undignified, wallowing triumphalist orgy, and no amount of gracious behavior on Clinton's part will help to "transfer power smoothly". Showing up is just plain stupid.

And I bet you were also surprised at some of the jaw-dropping flaming-asshole moves he made both during the campaign and since the election -- as in, how can anything with a central nervous system show its ass in public like that, and just keep on doing it? And regarding misogyny, he is quoted as saying in a casual conversation 'grab 'em by the p***y...how is that any different than the extremely common phrase, used by all genders, 'grab 'em by the balls'?

If Trump has a lot of really bad dirt on him, it would most definitely have come out during either the primary or general election, and most likely by Republicans who hate him,more-so than Dems, but during the final stretch of the general election, 'progressives', or at least Dem. operatives, would have released the most damning stuff; why didn't they? Because it doesn't exist, or, they are as 'bad'as, or worse, than him?

I'm immediately leery when the go to accusations against anyone are vague but repeated ad nauseam charges of 'racism', misogyny, homophobia (transphobia, etc.), etc., etc. One of the last refuges of a scoundrel may well be extreme patriotism, but there are others, like endless accusations of misogyny, racism, sexism, homophobia.

The difference is that, while the expression "grab 'em by the balls" is used in a figurative sense -- one does not literally grab one's business competitors' testicles -- Trump was speaking quite literally. He has demonstrated repeatedly that he does not have any respect for women's autonomy on even the most basic level.

Still in denial? Adam, you are smart enough to know the brilliance of the electoral collage when it was created almost 200 years. You are also smart enough to know we live in a representative Republic where the states that make up this country vary greatly in population, size, economic and social needs. Would it be fair(and reasonable) that heavily populated states like CA, NY and TX decide elections for the rest of the country? It is clear many totalitarian Lefties would love a one-state nation where our 'brilliant elites' coerce the population with top-down one-size fits all form of policy and government...

Since you mention the popular vote. lets examine CA. It is the most populated state in the country. CA is a one party state, Democrat. Obama won 6.5 million votes in California in 2012. Clinton won 8.7 million - that's a difference of 2.2 million votes. Considering that Clinton won the popular vote nationwide by 2.8 million votes, it's hard to ignore that California number as a major factor behind her popular vote win. Hypothetically speaking, if you remove CA votes from the election its essentially a tie.

They used to teach this stuff in school:

"The Electoral College is a reflection of the very compromise that formed the Constitution. The large-state delegates proposed the Virginia Plan, which would apportion Congressional representation by population. The small-state delegates proposed the New Jersey plan, which would give each state an equal vote. The ultimate compromise was, as we all know, to have one part of the legislature (the Senate) in which each state had an equal say, and another (the House) in which representation was apportioned by population.

The Electoral College reflects this compromise. The 100 votes of the Senate, the 435 of the House, and three extra votes for the District of Columbia make up the 538 electoral votes.

It’s a central part of the compromise that made this country possible.

They used to teach this stuff in the schools. In case they don’t, pass this along to anyone who complains about the Electoral College today."

Hypothetically speaking, if you remove CA votes from the election its essentially a tie.

Hypothetically speaking, if you remove FL, PA and TX from the election, Clinton wins.

Sorry, but Californians are as much Americans as you or I. Yet the right seems fascinated with trying to paint them as something less than American. Tough nuggies, as we used to say.

Yes, I'm aware of the reasons for the electoral college, am even willing to accept, at least for argument's sake, that it was created to ensure votes for the Constitution in small states such as Rhode Island and Delaware and had absolutely nothing to do with trying to keep Southern states from breaking away over slavery (not that that much mattered, that issue was just delayed by 80 years or so).

But the Founding Fathers, in their wisdom, also gave us a way to amend the Constitution. There is nothing immutable about the Electoral College, unless you're one of those people who believe the original constitution is inerrant - and blacks should be enslaved and counted as 3/5ths people, women shouldn't be allowed to vote, etc. Times change and the fact remains that in any other 21st century democracy, Clinton would be taking the oath of office on Jan. 20.

At least relative to the country's population, I appreciate the electoral college more and more. Time may come when New England will be in a popular minority and we'll be thanking the foresight of the founding fathers. Perhaps didn't work for the majority of us this time, but times change as you note. The majority can also be a tyranny.

Popular vote, if it decided the election for president, would incentivize candidates to campaign in more places to more people.

Also, we have to guarantee the sacred (in a democratic republic) franchise to vote.

Just different places - and probably fewer. Thus the prior point about CA. Promise the world to a few like minded liberal/moderate states - NY/CA/FL/PA/IL/NJ - and the election is over.

Remember - our country is not America. It's the United States of America. You go to a popular vote and my guess is we divide into 2-3 countries within a decade. The left needs to stop hyperventilating just like the right was doing 8 years ago - this too shall pass.

My one concern is that we are no longer modulating right of center/left of center. Now the pendulum is swinging to extremes - and it costs a lot every time that pendulum changes direction. This kind of politics will break us. That's a promise.

A prior suggestion to split the electoral votes proportionally is worthwhile considering though - you still get the smaller states having a little move influence -but you can't ignore any state - you need to fight for every electoral vote - I'd be open to that after some further analysis.
