Roslindale market to shut for three days next month after being caught selling beer to a teen with a fake ID

The state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission has ordered Home Market, 165 Belgrade Ave., in Roslindale, to close Aug. 2, 3 and 4 as punishment for letting a 17-year-old with a fake Maryland driver's license walk out with an 18-pack of Bud Light, a six-pack of Smirnoff Ice, a six-pack of Twisted Tea and a 25-oz. can of Natural Ice one afternoon this past January.
According to the commission's decision, a state investigator was stationed outside the market when the kid walked out around 3:55 p.m. on Jan,. 17 with the various beverages. The investigator found him to look suspiciously young for an alcohol purchaser and, under questioning, the youth admitted he was 17 and produced the bogus driver's license, the decision states.
The commission ordered another three days of suspension, but decided not to enforce that if the market stays out of trouble for the next two years.

I'm assuming it is within the store's rights to refuse service to anyone, whether or not they show an I.D. that represents the person being legal drinking age? If they refused, and it's not within their right, then they could face some sort of action from the client, no? Anyone know the law in this case?

Out of state licenses are legally not valid in here in MA - only MA licenses/ID cards and passports are.
Military ID, too.
Military ID is also valid.

Subtle difference
Which IDs to accept is up to the license holder. The difference is that if the ID in question is issued by Massachusetts or is a military ID or US passport, then the license holder is held harmless if a minor uses it to acquire liquor (think a kid who swipes or borrows an older sibling's driver's license). In contrast, non-Mass, non-US IDs don't offer that same protection (which is why one Theater District club that keeps getting in trouble decided to reject anybody who shows a Venezuelan ID).

This distinction can backfire amusingly
A few years ago I was entering a bar with a college friend from PA and the bouncer, clearly not a UHub reader, got feisty about the (valid) out-of-state ID and confiscated it. He changed his tune when she walked over to a nearby cop to report the theft. He could have refused her entry, but he wasn't allowed to steal her license.

All US driver's licenses are accepted in MA - there are books that a business can have that shows each license around the country, and includes watermarks and other anti-fake measures. The ID's that are acceptable are:
MA DL
MA ID card
US DL
Military ID - must be current
Passport
Again, it's a subtle difference

I find it strange they didn't include Green Cards in the list when they do allow foreign passports.

What was their first clue that this was an underage buyer? ;-)

Or are they only not allowed to sell liquor for those three days?
OK, that's probably a stupid question, but the headline says the market will be closed and the attached document doesn't clarify anything.

They only need to refrain from selling alcohol. The ABCC does not have jurisdiction over the rest of their market. The license is for the alcohol only. Therefore, they may remain open to sell their other goods during their suspension (if they don't get it overturned).
