Paula Tennyson watched workers racing to finish the new Mass. Ave. bridge over Comm. Ave. this morning. MassDOT announced tonight it's hoping to have the two roads open to traffic in time for the Monday morning rush - a day ahead of schedule.
The Mass Ave project has been going very well and at this time we are ahead of schedule. Crews have been working steadily around the clock since the demolition of the deteriorated bridge began on Thursday night, May 10. Numerous demolition and replacement steps have fallen into place nicely and there have been no unforeseen challenges with construction. Everything from the deployment of heavy equipment, installation of pre-cast units and approach utility work has gone well and we expect the new bridge to open to the public in the morning on Monday.

It's amazing what we do to accommodate the car culture but fail to do for transit!
Numerous delays on the Green Line Extension.
Replacing the Comm Ave bridge over the Pike - gotta do that quickly, in a matter of weeks to the tune of $110 million.
But building West Station, about the same amount of $... well you all have to wait until 2040. Not a priority...
It's great that we have the focus to replace bridges so fast, but lets prioritize transit as well!
Funny thing about infrastructure
Some think that replacing bridges before they collapse should get priority over creating new transportation infrastructure.
If you want one comparable, they replaced the bridges along the Fairmount Line with similar speed. If you want another, how long has construction on 128 between routes 9 and 24 been going on? Less than the GLX timeline.
Don't forget
all the bus routes that use Mass. Ave. It will benefit transit riders too.

Mass DOT should take over all
Mass DOT should take over all T projects. They know how to get things done. Don't blame the car culture for MBTA failures, blame the T for being completely inept in yet another area of public transportation.
I wish the GLX was scrapped
I wish the GLX was scrapped in favor of connecting the Red and Blue lines.

how about no Green Line Extension until all of the T is up to par?
Look, bridges need to be repaired and thus this is what you have here. And, yes, bridges (i.e. infrastructure repairs) need to happen before any future "what would be nice" transit projects. Why? Because those of us who drive cars as well as folks who bike ride over and under bridges as well as folks who walk over and under bridges do not wish to be crushed by falling debris and/or other negative aspects of bridges that are in severe disrepair.
Open except for sidewalk
MassDOT failed to mention that the sidewalk on the side leading to Cambridge (Eastern) is closed. The detour is to backtrack and cross four streets. It also appears that the bike lanes have not yet returned.
I'm glad they decided to
I'm glad they decided to replace the bridge rather than rebuilding it as a grade-level intersection. This benefits everyone, including passengers on the #1 bus.
