One of the Hailey murder victims was just two weeks from being the first person in his family to graduate college
Friends are identifying one of the two men fatally shot at the Mildred Hailey Apartments in Jamaica Plain last night as Chris Joyce, 23.
Joyce was scheduled to graduate with an accounting degree from Salem State University on May 19.
On his LinkedIn page, Joyce, who graduated Cristo Rey High School in Dorchester, wrote of how important it was to him to be the first member of his family to graduate college.
With the action of graduating anything, it shows education persistence and consistency, in which my family nor community has ever experienced! I want to start a new trend of Love and Happiness."
Bigger than My Block, a group that helps students from Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan get through college, said farewell to Joyce tonight with a photo showing him beaming in a Class of 2018 scarf:
Violence is consuming the lives of our young people and we are so torn by yet again another senseless act of violence. We have to do better. The BTMB family send our condolences to his family.
Police have not identified the second murder victim or announced an arrest in the case. The Globe reports neither victim lived at the complex, formerly known as Bromley-Heath, but that both had ties to residents.

That's
Really sad and tragic. May he rest in peace. I really feel for his family.
What a horrible tragedy
That's like a kick in the stomach. To be so close to graduation, and all that hope that goes along with it. My heart goes out to Chris' family, and his Salem State friends who will feel such a loss when he's not celebrating with him on the 19th.
This is so unfortunate
He sounded like a gentle and kind young man who was seeking to invest in the things he saw in those around him. It takes many of us our entire lives to develop that wisdom. I'm sad and happy that my last and only memory of him will be his smile in that photograph.
Rest well. You deserve the best.
