Aftermath of a crash.
UPDATE: Go into the comments for a description of the three-car crash by the daughter of the occupants of one of the cars.
Drew drove past another crash near our circumferential highway today, this time on the ramp to 128 from Rte. 24:

It depends on the Subaru. The newer ones are safer.
I do, however, agree with you about the Hyundai! Those look rather tinny--and really dangerous if you're hit in one of them.
Not a fan of K-cars,
I'm not a big fan of K-cars, but the insurance industry crash tests (in the link above) show the Hyundais are better to crash in than most cars. And that Subarus have been so for many years. Don't know what you consider "newer ones."
Subarus don't roll like other SUVs
I have a low-to-ground Impreza, as I don't off-road much, but even the taller subies don't flip as often because of their weight distribution.
They have a flat "boxer" engine. It sits very low in the engine compartment. Having the weight down low gives even a jacked up car far more stability.
I have friends that live in places where aftermarket suspensions on a vehicle are desirable (think "nurse living in a rural mountain area), and they wont buy jeeps anymore and swear by their Outbacks for this reason.
Unlike you, I did my research before buying. Between the safety ratings, the CVT that works like a dream, and the AWD in the winter, I'm never going back.

Typical passenger cars with soft suspension under heaving braking will lower the nose and raise the tail, where a following vehicle with lowered nose will slip under. Sports and especially race cars are lower to the ground and brake flatter.

All that's needed is the last car in line to cause that kind of thing to happen. Here's hoping everybody, including the mother who was transported to the hospital via ambulance, recovers.
