Chicken war close to erupting on the Dedham/Boston line

New Popeyes going in on VFW Parkway in West Roxbury

Boston's newest Popeyes, on VFW Parkway in West Roxbury, is getting nearer to opening, just a quick jog up the road from the Chick-fil-A on the Dedham side of the line.

Once opened - the owners have yet to appear before the Boston Licensing Board for a food-serving license and still have to take down the giant, fading Bagelville sign from the previous tenant - the Popeyes will add a new facet to West Roxbury's Fun Mile, which already has stores at which to procure ciggies and beer, party favors, sex toys and beds on which to play with the sex toys, as well as a laser-tag place and a kid's party spot.

The fried-chicken joint will sit between the McDonald's and the Burger King. In addition to Bagelville, the site was home to one of Boston's few Dunkin' Donuts to fail and, before that, an Arby's. Once it opens, Dedham and West Roxbury residents will no longer have to make the long trip to Roslindale for their Popeyes fix.

Sorry to see Bagelville go, but this is better than Arby's, so I guess it's a win.

Bagelville was FILTHY. We used to love eating there but quickly the place went downhill. Dead flies everywhere. on the tables, windowsills, behind the counters. Disgusting. Hundreds of them. The staff was always too busy arguing with each other to clean I guess.. Is that an everything bagel you're enjoying?? look closer... its dead bugs.

I’m so hungry I could eat at Arby’s!

Decades ago that was an Arby's.

I worked at that Arby’s when I was in high school

I used to patronize that Arby's all the time. Sure the meat isn't Capital Grille quality, but they still make a tasty roast beef sandwich.

How dare you?

Oh cool, now I have someplace decent to go for lunch when I get my car serviced. (Involves crossing VFW parkway through a gap in the median fence, but what's life without a little mortal peril?)

"the long trip to Roslindale" Roslindale is a lot closer to West Roxbury than Dedham for the majority of west roxbury residents

Sorry, was just a poor attempt at a joke.

But, you know, a lot of people in West Roxbury are pretty close to Dedham. I realize that the hoitier parts of Westie sometime forget about Washington Street, but there are a lot of people living on or just off it now.

The majority is closer to the one in Roslindale??? Not true at all. The one in Dedham is literally on the Dedham/West Roxbury line. The one in Roslindale is as far away from West Roxbury as it could possibly be in Roslindale. With the traffic, there are probably parts of Roslindale that you can get to the one in Dedham quicker.

and, before that, an Arby's.

and before that, a Lums... or Howdys... I forget..

Howdy was where DD is at the corner of Spring/VFW.

I guess you were stuck in anon limbo after you gave the same info I did 10 minutes after you.

Howdy's was at the corner of Bridge & Rte. 1 where Dunk's is now, and Lum's was where Taco Bell is now.

As a child we used to go to the Lums near us in upstate NY. My father would get, what seemed to me to be a giant frozen glass of beer and I'd watch the ice melt off it during the meal. How was the food? Must have been OK, but all I remember is that huge beer.

As a kid, the Lum's menu was the best. I remember it had activities or something.

I never knew it was a chain as that concept was foreign to me as a kid and it was gone before I was old enough to know there were others.

Lum's was just down the street on the current site of the Taco Bell. Many years after Lum's closed someone attempted to create a multi restaurant food court kind of a place in the Lum's building. I remember a Subway and a Honeydew Doughnuts there, and I seem to remember pizza as well. That venture ended with a fire, and eventually a tear down to make way for Taco Bell.

Howdy's was further down the street on the corner of Spring St. That site was a vacant lot for some 20 years of more and now is the home of a Dunkin Donuts.

Of all of the restaurant's in that area, I miss Fontaine's the most.

All we need now is a Waffle House. Unless Tim Hortons wants to make another move south of the border!

...if it's Canadian you want, how about Smoke's (see the previous poutine thread).

Chick fil A: you can get chicken anywhere, but where can you get chicken AND support a religious freak who hates everyone who is different from him?

up

How is the owner of Chic Filet a hater? Because of his religious beliefs? His personal opinion is marriage is between a man and a woman. Where is the hate? The hate comes from people like you who think your opinion is the only one that matters.

The best customer service one can get at a fast food place.

For someone to completely misrepresent the owner's beliefs. He donated money to a group that believes in "traditional marriage". Don't agree with him, but saying he's a "religious freak who hates everyone who is different than him" is just stupid. Nobody has ever accused the company of not hiring/feeding/licensing a franchise to those "different than" the owner.

you aren't just supporting an owner, you're also supporting the people and families who work for that employer. Chick Fil A probably has 40,000 employees; and they are by far the nicest, most well organized workforce in fast food. Eating there supports a lot of lower income families, single parents, teenagers, etc.

Stop acting like the owner is the only one who benefits from eating there, or that everyone who works there shares his beliefs.

for fast food made from CAFO chicken -- and I imagine many of the employees are great people.

But when you eat at a restaurant, you aren't just supporting the employees and their families: you're also supporting their employer.

Me, I won't put money into the pocket of an employer that plows some of its profits (nearly $2M to date) into anti-gay groups that are trying to enshrine homophobic discrimination into law under the guise of "religious freedom".

Fuck that chain.

of CEOs whose companies move manufacturing overseas to pay slave wages and abuse systems with little to no workers rights. I'm glad to hear you don't buy anything from literally any minor or major corporation.

You can play that game but at the end of the day you know you're ok with it so you don't have to pay $3,000 for an iPhone and $500 for some new Nikes.

have outsourced their labor overseas. I don't own Nikes; most of my clothes are manufactured in America or the EU. My car was built in the US by union labor.

I own an iPhone because it's the only mobile device that is secure enough for my day job. If it were built in the US and cost $3K, I'd still buy it: I have no real alternative there.

Where I have options, I try to spend according to my values. Chick-fil-A doesn't match mine.

The Salvation Army? You're worried about them donating to the Salvation Army?

The fellowship of Christian Athletes? You know that's a voluntary group right? They aren't imposing their beliefs on anyone. if you agree w/the FCA's beliefs (yes, they preach abstinence...which just so happens to be a Christian belief), you join the group, if not, don't.

volunteers!"

You're either ignorant or being disingenuous. Give it the cover of "Christian beliefs" if you want, but the company's founders have donated millions of dollars to anti-gay hate groups like the Family Research Council.

Look the other way for your tasty chicken sandwich if you choose to, but please don't kid yourself about where some of your money is going.

Do you know anything about the Fellowship of Christian Athletes? Is it not a group that CHRISTIAN athletes are free to join? Is it mandatory? You must have some secret intel on this, because you are clearly literate and can see that it's the group I was referring to when I said it's a group whose members CHOSE to join.

You're right, and I'll keep buying my chicken from a franchise owner whose religious beliefs I know nothing about. You can keep buying your iPhone from business owners whose religious beliefs you know nothing about.

see that that group espouses a "sexual purity" doctrine that includes anti-gay messaging that it pushes on its ministers and the athletes it proselytizes to.

So I don't know everything about them. Just enough to know that I don't want to fund them indirectly with my fast-food purchases.

Again, feel free to avert your eyes, but don't pretend you don't know.
