T Can Apply A "Fix-It-First" Policy. Freeze Expansion & Fares
This derailment, complete with iconic imagery of a crumbling transit system, should be the last straw. Poftak should apply a "Fix-It-First" policy for the T and freeze both expansion and fare increases. Of the $8 billion budget, over $1 billion is devoted toward expansion. That billion can go towards immediate large scale fixes while keeping fares at their current rates.
Sure, if we close the Central Artery Tunnel
It's been said a thousand times. The GLX project (and, IIRC, the Red-Blue connector) are LEGALLY REQUIRED. Because the Central Artery Tunnel results in more local air pollution, that project was required to do other things to reduce pollution -- expand the MBTA services.
It's not optional. It's not even a decision made by the MBTA. It was made by a society who wanted more automobile capacity, and in addition to slapping the T with some of the debt, didn't think twice about requiring MBTA expansion.

How about the Arborway Green Line restoration? They were also "legally mandated" Big Dig mitigation. The state successfully kicked out of those flimsy agreements. They switched out SL P3 and the Arbor projects with more reasonable efforts. Same amount of funds, but better uses of money: greenways, land preservation, beefed up buses, stronger security. With the GLX, you could build 1,200 miles of greenway across Massachusetts as a switch out

Take a percentage count of all the "workers" standing around with their hands in their pockets.
You'd think they'd be worried about tripping over the tracks, but since they're just standing there with no intention to move, no worries.
Overall, one can just feel the throbbing sense of urgency and concern that the public is in for some massive inconvenience.
