Coronavirus cases increasing rapidly at area hospitals
By adamg on Thu, 03/19/2020 - 10:37am
WBUR reports Mass. General now has five patients with Covid-19 in its ICU and another 70 suspected cases in patients doing well enough to not need intensive care.
The Dorchester Reporter reports Carney Hospital is now banning all visitors - and has shut its Dunkin' Donuts - as it transitions to an all-coronavirus facility.

WHAT?
Now its gotten real... when a dunkin donuts closes for this...
Dunkin Index
We need to have a Dunkin' Index like other places have the Waffle House Index.
The sad thing
I'm guessing DD doesn't have much in the way of paid leave. These people are at high risk given the public interaction and some might feel inclined to keep working if they start to feel sick on the basis of needing to keep a paycheck.
French toast system
Doesn't really fit this situation well. And eating french toast is kind of social.
Should there be a toilet paper scale. Like the number of stores that have TP in stock. Not necessarily a great scale because there will be a time when there is no longer a TP shortage and there will still be a serious COVID-19 problem.
Or maybe we should have a case tracker.
Number of tested positive vs the suspected. Not that anyone will ever have a close count of actual infected people.
A different tracker
Actually I'm in the mood for a different tracker at the top of the page... maybe a calmer color and a calming message.... a 1-10 scale of yoga-meditation-affirmations? A 1-5 scale of uplifting social media posts? Something trendy but calming.... No more red bar, but something in soft blues and greens preferably..
Who could have possibly imagined that this would happen?
Well, somebody did because the Carney is being Coronated.
I'm not surprised that they closed the dunks. My guys were both serv-safe trained and compared Starbucks and Dunks notes. Starbucks has an entire protocol regarding "hospital locations" that they have applied to all locations now (including the removal of dine-in capacity). Dunkin is franchised and, well, some are better than others - a crap shoot.

1.Corona......2.Corona...etc
Not for nothing, family works
Not for nothing, family works at MGH and I think this is worse than what we are seeing on local news reports.,
Front line health care workers are getting stretched. Supplies low and many, many people sick - of all ages!
She participated in a clinical trial yesterday of how to do her job and minimize the risk of infection on her. Needless to say it didn't go too well. The powers to be are doing what they can with so many things about this still unknown.
For the rest of us, we need to do our part and stay home! If you must go out, keep a distance from others. That's the most we can do to help at this time, other than volunteering to help others in a safe way.
A friend of mine is a nurse
A friend of mine is a nurse at Brigham and it is the same there. How do you keep the staff safe or set up any meaningful protocol with no testing available and no masks or respirators?
N-95 Masks should not be a problem
As of last night when the President signed the most recent COVID-19 bill into law the supply of masks magically increased dramatically.
3M has a capacity [as of end of January] to manufacture in Minnesota 35 Million N-95 masks per month -- effectively 1 Million per day [for those of you challenged by math]
However, until 12 hours ago only 5 Million of the 35 Million produced in February could be used for protection against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. That's because only 1/7 of the production was made on a line certified by the FDA. Today that has changed because the new law allows all of the N-95 masks made for the construction industry to be used for medical worker personal protection -- hence all 35 Million made last month and whatever fraction of 35 Million made so-far this month are in the inventory.
In addition 3M is ramping up production to what will be about 1.5 Million masks per day. Honeywell and a couple of other US suppliers also have the same legal protection to ship any N-95 mask to Mass General or Brigham, Lahey, Carney, etc.
So -- Voila as of this AM -- Mass Gen should talk to Suffolk Construction about N-95 masks -- I'll bet Suffolk has plenty [and no current need of them as all of their major projects are now on hold]
I'll believe it when the
I'll believe it when the arrive in the hospital. This is all a nice soundbite but when the supply closets are low and people are being told to only use surgical masks to conserve the N95 masks there is a shortage.
If you have a weak immune system
A hospital is the last place where you'd want to hang out.
