Somewhere in JP, somebody is coming to the realization that, no, JP is not better than that

As Tom the roving UHUb photographer walked down Bynner Street in Jamaica Plain yesterday, something made him look down at a collection of obviously used masks and gloves, and so he noticed somebody had had a strong reaction to them - strong enough to no, not put them in the nearest trash, but to stop and compose a note imploring his or her fellow Plainers to cut that out, because JP Strong or something.

And many places have this problem. I’ve found used masks on my lawn multiple times now.
Try to still care about the environment and dispose of your trash properly, people.

If you provided trash cans, they would be used
City doesn’t provide enough public trash cans. We had to advocate for one, first it was installed across the street....then another was added....then they took it away ....so gutters are lined with this stuff. We need more public trash cans. If you give them one ...they will use it
There is a convenient thing most people have

This has nothing to do with the city providing trash cans, and everything to do with lazy people.
I don't disagree, but...
given that lazy people aren't going anywhere (see what I did there?), the best option is to recognize that people are going to be lazy, and use our public infrastructure to reduce the negative effects of that laziness wherever possible. Whereas just saying "people need to be less lazy" does nothing, except maybe making you feel better.
I've seen folks....
... throw trash on the ground when they were only feet away from a trash container downtown. It shocked me at first, but then I realized it was just a common Boston sort of thing.
That would work for the items in this picture.
There's no excuse for that level of piggishness. But if you're on foot and grabbing a greasy slice on a paper plate, or discarding a food container, you need a nearby trash receptacle (that has actually been emptied since spring). Not all of us have cars.
Never had a problem with trash on my lawn before
People should not toss their mask on lawns as they walk by.

There is a bus stop in front of my building. There is also a big trash disposal receptacle. Its convenient location does not stop people who sit on our steps from dropping their trash, which now includes masks, on the sidewalk in front of the steps.
Reusable washable cloth masks...
.... create less trash.
The disposable mask is the next plastic shopping bag.
An experiment for you
Put a plastic bag over your face. It will definitely protect you from diseases!

My "travel kit" is a carabiner with a cloth mask, my wallet (has a key ring) and car and house keys. I just clip it on when I go out. I trade out the mask as needed, wash them with my clothing.
Costco sells reusable masks that are light enough for working out. Much cheaper than the disposable ones.

I don't understand
Just don't understand the reasoning behind the disposal of masks on sidewalks. What makes one decide to whip it off while outside and toss it. Have seen many in Maverick and Central Squares in East Boston, always makes me wonder.
That's easy
The majority of Boston residents don't care about littering. Done with your Dunks? Drop it onto the ground. Didn't win on the scratcher? Drop it onto the ground. Done with the trip to the store, take off your mask and drop it on the ground. Own a dog without a yard, go have it crap on Fallon Field. Etc...
Reasoning, lol. The reason is 'I don't care, not my problem after I drop it.'
Dental floss picks
I wonder about all those dental floss picks all over the ground everywhere. I never see people actually using those things yet they are strewn everywhere I look all over the city. It's unlikely that people are consistently flossing their teeth in public then just tossing them on the ground. My suspicion is they are being used as some kind of drug paraphernalia.
