Group expands, renovates residential center near Mass and Cass
Volunteers of America reports it's re-opened its Hello House, its residential recovery center in a brownstone on Mass. Ave. near Harrison Avenue.
The renovated center now has 28 beds, two more than before, along with several new bathrooms, a new ventilation center and new furniture.
The Men’s Hello House provides a structured environment - with access to counseling, recovery education and case management - for clients to develop the skills necessary to live a substance-free life. After a stay that affords participants the individual time needed to move through stage-based treatment, they reintegrate back into their families and communities as sober individuals who are employed and committed to an ongoing recovery process. VOAMASS offers program graduates access to long-term supports, including mental health counseling.

A Sacklerville gain.
It’s not a lot but maybe a start.
Are sober houses getting better oversight?
Brownstone?
Your NYC roots are showing.
Bowfront. Rowhouse, or townhouse. A brownstone is something people from away have brought here.
Most South End houses are made from brick, which is red.
NYC houses which are referred to as brownstones are sandstone. A good amount of that stone came from Springfield MA south into the CT river valley. If you walk around some parks in Springfield you can see outcroppings of it like we see Roxbury Puddingtstone here in Franklin Park and Dorchester Park. The Stop and Shop in Brigham Circle is built into a old quarry that supplied puddingstone for a lot of churches including the Mission Church and St. Peter's in Dot.
A lot of bricks in Boston houses came from over by Alewife where there was a brickworks where the movie theatre, the capped dump, and the Whole Foods are now.
Yeah
Brownstone, as in the people over there have been dancing with Mr. Brownstone.
Go tell that to
the many multi-generation Roxbury residents who live in or grew up in such homes and call them brownstones (despite them being red).
You got that right @eeka
You got that right @eeka. It's a Brownstone regardless of color at least in Roxbury MA. Bow fronts can be found on Warren Street and Intervale Street on the Warren Street side but no one actually calls them that. Bowfronts have rounded living rooms.
Ever the out of touch pedantic lecturer.
We call them brownstones regardless of the stone used. I lived in one for years. It was brown. Everyone in the neighborhood called their homes brownstones. Still do, I imagine.
Get used to it, suburbanite.
Wait
John Costello is a suburbanite?
Actually
I lived on Appleton Street for years. We called it a bowfront, because it had a, wait for it, a bow front. It was made of red, not brown, brick too.
I hope Pee Wee had fun in his playhouse calling it a brownstone. Pretend is fun. Isn't it?
Through and through.
And really insecure about it so ….
Actually, the narrative for
Actually, the narrative for Saint Peter's is that it was built of puddingstone quarried on the same site.
.. so the old-timers say, anyway. Even if that's not correct, the "Who Shot Liberty Valance" rules are in effect.
Very convenient access to the
Very convenient access to the open air drug market that is literally a 3 minute walk away!

Strict regs. Proof of no drug use, no guests, diligent working of sobriety and toward goals which can only be obtained by sobriety. Applicants must have a deep hatred toward drugs and a desire to see all their trigger people to stay the fuck away from them. It's up to the addict.
What about the girlfriends?
What about the girlfriends? Get behind me Satan! I'm trying to stay off the shit that made me addicted and fuck up my life! Give these men strength. They're gonna need it. The Devil is waiting outside on the sidewalk.
