Dan Kennedy gets the scoop: The Globe is ending Globe Direct, its "free" ad circular that had been bedeviling people across the Boston area for years.

Big sighs
Thousands of innocent trees just sighed in relief.
Scoops Kennedy
I bet Woodward and Bernstein are proud.
...... I'm kidding.
I don't like that sort of advertising , so wasteful.
This is the main way that supermarkets advertise
It comes to me as an insert in the Thursday paper, and always contains weekly circulars from Market Basket, Star Market, and Stop & Shop. Occasionally, it includes a non-grocery ad such as Ocean State Job Lot.
I assume it is zoned, so people in other places get different store ads.
I’m guessing the supermarkets are cutting back
They seem to be pushing online ordering very hard these days where clipped coupons and circulars really don’t matter.
Plus the globe has to contend with skyrocketing paper costs, fuel, driver unavailability, etc.
In a way it’s surprising the “litter suburban lawns” method of distribution lasted as long as it has.
Pour one out
The Ocean State Job Lot circular is every week (at least here in Milton) and I am going to miss it. So many deals!
I'm not a Globe subscriber
but I get the supermarket ads on Thursday or Friday anyway.
Is that going away too? Sometimes I want to know what's on sale at Market Basket the next week.
There's far more wasteful junk mail out there (like AARP's, as anyone over 55 knows :-( )
Demoulas
You know.. Demoulas' finally entered the 1990s and have a website. Has this week and next week's circular too.
www.shopmarketbasket.com
its pretty slick.
Gee
Come to think about it.. i haven't had trash direct at my door in a few years now. None at my neighbors either. Its like they stopped delivering here a few years ago.
Excellent. Say what you want
Excellent. Say what you want, but at least it's a big institution finally doing something to stop litter and waste. Can't say much about the big institutions that make syringes or porta potties.
Except that they're not doing
Except that they're not doing it to stop litter and waste. The memo says they're doing it because it's not making money anymore
I think "Litter and Waste" was secretly the official slogan of Globe Direct.
I believe the Boston Globe
can claim those circular advert. deliveries as "circulation" to boost ad rates. About 5-6 years ago, we had a raft of these deliveries in Roslindale for current and former subscribers, with ads in plastic wraps, tossed everywhere, which residents had to clean up. After a a city council meeting on the topic, the Globe cut back such deliveries to current subscribers only. Long story short, this is good news.
Will no one think of the
Will no one think of the parakeets? What are we to line our birdcages with now? Not to mention cut rate kitty litter if you have the patience and your cat approves.
Countless times
have I grabbed these, held them to the sky and vowed to run for the highest office in the land if only to eradicate these mailers from the prairies, mountains, and oceans white with foam.
Pity
I like seeing the fliers for my three main grocery stores, all in one place and in a convenient format. (Yes they all have websites, but surfing to three sites will never be as quick as skimming the paper fliers.)
Hey I like billboards too. Guess I'm just a relic of the marketing past.
Phone
Even though I do not have a landline anymore.. I still keep the phonebook I get once a year.
Something about flipping thru the yellow pages to find a business that just makes sense. The internet can be too much when searching...
Every thing is so neatly organized in the phone book so stuff is easy to find.
