Red Line train derails in South Boston yard

The front wheels of a Red Line car came off the rails in a mishap yesterday at the MBTA's Cabot Yard in South Boston.

According to an initial internal account, a driver was moving four cars:

Train was making a move out of 8 south of the car house when it picked up a metal grate and dragged it. Knocking over the 3rd rail. Cabot Yardmaster reports that truck #1 of 1741 is off the rail.

1741 and the three other cars are some of the older cars on the Red Line, initially put into service in the late 1980s.

At some point you have to think they're doing it on purpose.

I need to see the T interpreted as a Broadway production, this just screams musical theater now.

They appear to be focusing on the critical "Best Beaches in New England" issue.

You are missing a big one Adam.

They're sure not getting a lot of use out of that "Days Since Last Train Where No Train Should Be" signboard.

The "0" is practically burned out. Knowing the MBTA it will burn out explosively, starting a train fire.

The age of the car doesn't matter much if the cause was running over a metal grate.

I added that just to let folks know which type of car it was.

Even if the Metal grate is part of the infrastructure. How was it allowed to protrude in such way to became encumbered on a rail car.
