The City that Only Mostly Sleeps: Japanese, Indian food until 2 a.m. approved near Berklee

The Boston Licensing Board today approved letting a Japanese restaurant on Boylston Street near Mass. Ave extend its hours to 2 a.m. - and approved a new Indian place a couple doors down that also plans to stay open until 2 a.m.

The board considered both applications at separate hearings yesterday.

The Fenway Civic Association opposed Tori Japan's proposal to stay open until 2 a.m. at 1110 Boylston St., but said nothing about the planned Don’t Tell Aunty Indian restaurant at 1122 Boylston St.

The group claimed that it was unfair to nearby permanent residents to allow such late-night operations at Tori and said 2 a.m. would set a precedent that could lead to other applications for 2 a.m. closings on the restaurant-laden stretch of Boylston.

Too late, the board said today: Shah's Halal, located right next to the proposed Don't Tell Aunty - and with the same owners - already has a license to stay open until 2 a.m., at least on Fridays and Saturdays.

...and I hope this indeed starts a slippery slope toward being less restrictive about late night hours. Can't handle the noise? Maybe don't live across the way from a college campus.

This neighborhood was a perfectly quiet place for families until BU suddenly moved in in 1839.

BU wasn’t in Boston until 1869. Interestingly it was founded as a bible institute in Vermont for a few decades before relocating.

I think the word you wanted was pedant but that autocorrect didn’t know the difference

Every time a restaurant is allowed to stay open later this city gets a bit more livable for people who work at night, who are night owl students, who arrive in the city late, who want something to eat after going to the bar, etc. There are some neighborhoods in Boston that are 15 minute or better cities in the day time but nowhere in the city is a 15 minute city at night.

Ahh, to be a young student with an iron clad digestive system and eat sushi and Indian food after midnight.

I don't see anything in Adam's story here about a denial.

I misread? I thought the one opposed by the neighborhood association was denied.
