Women still trying to get into Boston bars with tiny booze bottles
Update: Board found violation, issued warning.
The manager at a Fenway bar says that before a woman - underaged, it turns out - collapsed on the dance floor and began foaming at the mouth, she tried to get in with "five or six small airplane bottles" of booze in her purse.
The issue of Boston bar-goers trying to sneak micro-doses of booze into bars came up yesterday during a hearing on a proposal to ban the sale of the tiny liquor bottles in Boston. A former bouncer at West End Johnnie's, who now works for the city of Chelsea trying to pair alcoholics with treatment, told Boston city councilors that a problem at the bar was people, in particular women, trying to sneak the tiny bottles in so they could get a buzz on without paying the bar for drinks and then dumping them into restroom toilets.
At issue today was an incident at the Fenway Johnnie's on Brookline Avenue - owned by the same guy as the West End one - on Nov. 6.
A group of women, who later told police they had pre-gamed before their arrival, arrived around 10:15 p.m. One of the women also had 50-ml bottles of booze in her purse. The doorman, on searching her purse, though, confiscated the bottles and, when she came back and tried to flirt with him to get them back, refused her entreaties. Her ID, the manager said, scanned OK in the device the bar uses to check IDs.
According to police and the manager, about 45 minutes later, the woman began feeling ill in the restroom, became unsteady, then collapsed to the floor, hitting her head. By the time EMTs arrived - they were delayed by hordes thronging Jersey Street after a show at MGM and bar owner John Caron said he had to try to halt traffic to get the two ambulances that arrived through - she was was lying on the floor, foaming at the mouth, according to a police report.
The licensing board decides Thursday whether Fenway Johnnie's could have done something different to prevent the underage drinker from getting into the bar and, if so, whether any sanctions are warranted.

Addiction doesn't
Addiction doesn't discriminate.
What would possess anyone...
To flush a small booze bottle? It just makes no sense at all.
No kidding. Especially
No kidding. Especially considering if you've already gotten away with smuggling it in, there's no use in hiding the trash.
IKR?
Especially when many women's rooms have a special discretely located receptacle just for small trash items.
alcohol
..
Not a woman
Man here.
I and my male friends used to buy mini Bacardi bottles to bring into the Old and New Gardens. Combined with a purchase of Coke from the Garden, it helped to make us happy.
Also, in the Old Garden, we used to smoke tobacco cigarettes to cover up the smell of marijuana cigarettes.
And that’s the way it was
They don’t even bother trying
They don’t even bother trying to cover up the wacky weed smell anymore.
Is it time to call out the National Guard?
.
I seen so many things I ain't never seen before
Don't know what it is, I don't wanna see no more
The radio is blastin', someone's knockin' at the door
I'm lookin' at my girlfriend, she's passed out on the floor
Maybe if drinks weren’t
Maybe if drinks weren’t inflated 500% at any bar around Fenway people could just go have a good time and not sneak in booze. Pregame culture is a recent thing . People used to not have to get hammered at home first just to save money .
You can literally buy an edible
For $3... and drink water if on a budget
For that matter
You can put a quarter's worth of gasoline in a handkerchief and huff it to your heart's content.
It's not the price
It's the customer.
Who wants to get shit-faced for as little as possible. They want free drinks.
The real question is why was she allowed entry after nips were found.
Lol
Pregame culture is new? Should tell that to all my buddies 30+ years ago
Pregaming was invented by Adam & Steve
About a million years ago, my husband and a female friend of ours used to smuggle full size beers into the bar. Once we forgot to bring an opener so we had the friendly barkeep pop the tops for us.
Yeah, who can afford to pay for the $40 beers
at the Cask anymore? I'll never forget those good ol' days when nobody had a few drinks outside of Fenway before the game.
A recent thing??
Way back in the old days, we used to drink and smoke the wacky weed
before going to bars and clubs.
before going to Sox, Celts, and Bruins games.
before going to restaurants.
before going to concerts.
We used to drink and smoke the wacky weed before drinking and smoking the wacky weed.
Nope. Pregame culture is not a recent thing.
maybe there should be a pay
maybe there should be a pay scale for athletes so hot dogs and beers dont require a mortgage,
Beers and hot dogs would be just as expensive
They charge that much because people will pay those prices.
Most of the money for player salaries comes from the TV rights (which you pay for in your cable bill).
Maybe there should be a beer cap instead
So the billionaires don’t make even MORE money off athletes’ labor and publicly subsidized stadiums.
ftfy
ftfy.
The whole debate about nips and pints and who's responsible for patrons arriving shitfaced and getting more shitfaced in the bathroom is like moving deck chairs on the Titanic. The root of the problem is people who need to get intoxicated to have fun (or relax, unwind, socialize, whatever).
Perhaps the funniest comment ever on this web site
Pregame culture is... not remotely a new thing.
And maybe if women's drinks
And maybe if women's drinks weren't spiked drugs so often....
Flushing Aside…
Could this BYOB practice be a safeguard against getting their drinks spiked? In the time it takes to open and then down a tiny bottle, there’s no opportunity for some POS to spike it.
Small mouths
The nips are harder (See what I did there?) to spike with drugs than a cocktail in a glass.
But foaming at the mouth? Thatvsounds like a sample size shampoo.
Or a seizure.
Seizure later!
At least she didn't bring in
At least she didn't bring in guns.
Since every bar is suffering
Since every bar is suffering a plague of drink spiking, this is the way now.
