Abandoned multi-family house on Columbia Road in Dorchester goes up in flames
By adamg on Sun, 12/08/2024 - 3:27pm
Boston firefighters responded to the house next to the KFC on Columbia Road in Edward Everett Square in Dorchester around 6:50 a.m. for what was quickly announced as a two-alarm fire.
Arriving firefighters saw heavy flames from the second floor and attic of the wooden, unoccupied building, the Boston Fire Department reports.
The department reports firefighters began attacking the fire from all four sides and from the roof of a neighboring house to keep the fire from spreading.
Part of the roof collapsed, and firefighters had to be careful to avoid getting hit by any of "the numerous slate tiles flying off the roof."
No injuries were reported.

Who Didn't See This Coming?
Consider it very fortunate that none of the KFC parking lot campers that were inside were also casualties.

I had been wondering about that house just the other day. The renovations seemed to be stalled for so long.

I also go down this way regularly and have been wondering what's up with this. Per Streetview, this historic house has been boarded up since 2019. More recently it looked totaly abandoned and left open to the elements.
There was a for-sale sign on it for much of that time. I remember that they were showing some plans for additional development and asking for something like $4 million. This property has had a funny vibe to it for a while.

The next house along Columbia also got a facelift in the last few years - not a gut renovation though.
What about this house makes it historic?
