The New England Free Jacks, who play in Quincy, won the Major League Rugby championship yesterday - for the second year in a row. No, we don't know where the name comes from either - our sole knowledge of the game is "Give Blood - Play Rugby" bumper stickers - but yay, Free Jacks!

In other news…
In other news, major league rugby is a thing that apparently exists in this country.
It's a great take
Tickets are reasonably priced, the concessions like beer are "bar priced" instead of Boston Garden, Fenway or Gillette prices, they have bands playing before and a band or DJ after the match, and it's a great family friendly crowd.
Equally or more important, the sport itself is fantastic to watch. It's close enough to American football that just learning a few basic differences will help you understand the game, but it has the non-stop action and toughness of hockey.
Free Jack
Pretty sure "Free Jack" refers to sailors in the former British colonies during/after the American Revolution. British sailors were "Jack Tars" and the flag was the "Union Jack," in contrast to the "Free Jacks" of the rebellious colonies.
