The cost of an indiscretion: $50,000

The Boston Business Journal reports the board of trustees at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center has censured CEO Paul Levy over that inappropriate relationship with an underling and fined him $50,000. Also, one trustee resigned, although he wouldn't say why.'

Levy posts his apology.

$50,000? From a guy who is paid a million dollars a year? It only takes him about two and a half weeks to make that.

$50K is a good chunk of cash, even for someone with his salary. Besides, do you think what he did was that bad? What would you have fined him? Remember that if you fine him too much, he can just walk. The board doesn't have a whole lot of leverage, just his job.

Come to think of it, I've never heard of an employer fining someone for any type of transgressions. They either get fired - or not.

If I did anything inappropriate/unethical with subordinates, I'd be fired and a complaint would be made against my professional license and most likely substantiated, which would mean no more license for me. I make less than $50,000 per year, and it would probably take me a year or more with no income coming in (or whatever sort of temp work or whatnot I could find) in order to switch careers.

And while I am responsible for the safety and well-being of the individuals and families I work with, they're the only ones who are viewing me as a role model and a responsible and ethical person. I don't set the entire culture of a huge organization. I don't have an entire staff worth of people who look toward me for moral and ethical guidance that affects their work with collective thousands of people. But someone who *is* in charge of a whole organization responsible for people's safety and well-being only gets fined a couple weeks' salary?

I guess what I'm confused about is whether not this employee in question was a direct subordinate of Mr. Levy, whether or not this person received any sort of improper benefits from Paul (as in bonuses, higher salary, etc)and why this particular employee was let go from the hospital in the first place. I'm an employee at the hospital and I've heard many rumors. Most, if not all, of the rumors are highly critical of Mr. Levy’s role in the entire situation. Please understand, I'm impartial to it all. We all make mistakes. Who I feel really bad for is not Mr. Levy but Mrs. Levy and his family. I guess I'd like to know what exactly happened. It's just very unfortunate that this entire affair had occurred because BIDMC is a wonderful place to work and this certainly leaves a black eye on this institution.
